The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - January 10, 2021
A Note from Principal Welch
Dear Families,
This past week, our nation was impacted by the civil unrest that occurred Wednesday at our United States Capitol. Many of our students, many of you, and many of our staff were impacted by the events that unfolded. As your school's leader, I want to share that is our job to support our students by listening and supporting feelings, but also supporting their critical thinking skills. It is not our job to teach students what to think, but rather, we support our students with how to think critically. I also want to share that every student and every one of you has a place in this school and community. I am committed to leading and supporting respectful conversations and listening to differences. We must be respectful of one another. Acts of hate and civil unrest have no place at Cottage Lake. We are a family here at Cottage Lake and I remain committed to supporting a respectful and inclusive school community.
To highlight our coming together, it was incredible to see so many of you this past Thursday during our materials pick-up event. I sure loved seeing so many of our students in the cars as you pulled through for pick-up. I miss you all! I want to thank our PTA for providing each of our students a small gift in the materials bags and to our art docents for also providing art supplies in the pick-up bags, as well. We continue to think outside the box this year! If you missed our pick-up, please do reach out via email to Sarah, Teri, or myself to schedule a time to gather your student's materials. Following Dr. Reid's COVID update and turning to reopen our school, we will keep you informed of our next materials pick-up event date. This will likely be towards the end of February.
As we continue to move forward in learning, the end of our first semester is also fast approaching. The semester ends on January 22 and then on Monday, January 25, we have a no school day for teachers to work on student report cards. I want to share that all student report cards will be mailed home to all families the week of February 1. Should you have questions after you receive the report card, please reach out to your child's teacher.
Please do take the time to read through the District News updates, as there are a few new additions there. We also have a PTA meeting this Tuesday and I'd love to see many of you there. Please find the link below in the PTA News section.
I appreciate each of you and all you have done and are doing to support students during remote learning. I am so thankful for our school community and how you support our school. We can do this, Sailors! Let's make this a great week!
In partnership,
Jen Welch, Principal

Highly Capable testing update
The Accelerated Models and Programs Department is in the middle of our 2020-2021 screening and assessment plan.
Students in grades 6 & 7
We are almost done remotely administering the NNAT3 to students who were referred for testing or are new to Northshore in grades 6 and 7. Our department has worked to contact families of these students in order to connect with families to enable them to take the NNAT3. Our testing window is almost over. Please contact us with any questions at hicap@nsd.org. We will invite those students who score above the 85% to take the Iowa Assessments in reading and math. We plan to send out scores after January 8th.
Grade 5 Update
We plan to work on device distribution for grade 5 during the month of January in hopes of screening fifth graders using the NNAT3 between February 1st-12th. Following the NNAT3, we will invite students to take the Iowa test if they score above the 85%.
Students in grades K-4
We are still working on the highly capable screening and assessment schedule for grades K-4. Our department will update families when we can safely test.
Thank you,
Accelerated Models and Programs Department

Meals during remote learning and hybrid learning
Beginning Wednesday, September 9, we are offering free meals for ALL children ages 18 and younger. Students do not need to be enrolled in the Northshore School District to receive meals.
