News from Sanborn School
February 15, 2021
A note from Mrs. Johansen
Brr! It's been COLD outside! As I'm sure you've heard, the wind chill has been keeping us inside for recess and breaks during the day. The cold weather guidelines are detailed in a section at the bottom of the newsletter for your reference. Keep sending the cold weather gear to school. If the "feels like" temperature is above zero, we are going to try to get out as much as possible.
With the cold weather, we've also seen an increase in car riders to school. Cars should not enter the front circle drive between 8:30-8:45. This area is designated for busses only. Please make sure you drop off and pick up your child at the designated back parking lot, by Door 8.
As you are dropping off your child, please make sure your child is packed and ready to make a quick transition out of your car. I've heard reports from our school neighbors that students are being dropped off and picked up on Wood and Oak Streets and crossing through traffic. This is not safe and cannot continue. It may take a few extra minutes, but please use the designated drop off/pick-up area, starting on Tuesday. The safety of our children is worth it.
I've enjoyed getting into many virtual and in-person classrooms over the past few weeks to see the great work that is being done. I continue to be so proud of the perseverance that our teachers and students are exhibiting through this pandemic. We would not be as successful at our school if it weren't for the support of our parent community, as well. Thank you!
Thank you for an excellent turnout at our first Virtual BINGO night! It was such fun! Thank you to the Sanborn PTA for providing the gift card prizes to the kids who won. We are working on distributing prizes to all the winners.
Come on out to support the amazing Sanborn PTA on Thursday night at the Culver's of Palatine on North Rand Road. Mention that you're with the Sanborn PTA and they make a donation to our organization!
Thank you,
Erika Johansen

The 5Essentials Survey is Here!
Each school year, teachers, parents, and students have an opportunity to share their views and perceptions about their school by participating in the 5Essentials Survey. 5Essentials survey information is a valuable tool used by your school to identify priority areas for improvement. As a parent, the 5Essentials survey is an opportunity to share your thoughts on the school's effectiveness.
The 5Essentials Survey will be administered online. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete, is anonymous and asks questions about five areas that are related to important student outcomes, including improved attendance and learning. The five areas focused on are:
Effective Leaders
Collaborative Teachers
Involved Families
Supportive Environments
Ambitious Instruction
The survey is managed by the University of Chicago and the school does not have access to your identity or survey responses. The 5Essentials Survey window opened on February 2, 2021 and closes March 5, 2021. To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/

Cold Weather/Recess Guidelines
I wanted to take a moment and remind everyone of the District 15 Cold Weather Recess Guidelines. This information was taken directly from our District 15 website: https://www.ccsd15.net/Page/67
Students generally go outside for recess every day, so they should be dressed appropriately. Exceptions are made only when a child brings a doctor's note excusing him/her from outdoor recess.
Staff members provide outdoor supervision at all times.
Indoor recess is determined based on the following guidelines:
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is below 0°F, all students will remain inside for the entire lunch hour.
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is between 0°-10°F, the preferred procedure is a rotation of 20 minutes for lunch, a 20-minute outdoor recess, and a 20-minute indoor recess. However, at the principal's discretion, students may be kept inside for the entire lunch hour.
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is above 10°F, students will have regular outdoor recess.
- Other considerations in which indoor recess is allowed include the condition of the playground and the presence of precipitation.
For indoor recess, students are supervised in their classrooms.
Please reach out to our front office if your family needs assistance with winter clothing for your Sanborn student(s).
