Deer Families
Deer Hill School News . October 1, 2021
Dear Deer Hill Families,
It was wonderful to welcome families to our Open House last Thursday. The format seemed to work well and provided opportunities for introductions, peeks in classrooms (and lockers!), and the presentation of important classroom information to ensure a successful school year. I think my favorite feedback was relayed by a teacher who asked a couple if they needed help finding a class. The dad's response speaks to how it's been far too long since we've had visitors -- "No thanks, we're just taking it all in." Looking ahead, teachers are scheduling conferences for the end of the month and appreciate the time to exchange insights about their students, share progress, and set goals.
Enjoy the fall weather that has come our way. It's one of my favorite times of the year when I see the Caramel Apples sign hung at Hilliard's!
All the best,
Alexandra L. Sullivan
Principal, Deer Hill School

Need to Knows
- MCAS Student Reports are scheduled to be delivered to the district by early next week, and the Student Reports will be sent to families in early October.
- An important reminder that there are no student drop offs or pick ups by vehicle in the front parking lot during arrival and dismissal times. Do not park and walk across the crosswalk and do not enter the bus lane. The only appropriate place to drop your student off by vehicle is the back loop. The only exception to this is if your child is arriving late or leaving early because of an appointment. Don't be intimidated by the back loop! The line moves very quickly.
- In his newsletter today, Superintendent Sullivan shared a letter from our director of Food Services, Marilyn Haraden, regarding supply chain issues that may impact our cafeteria menu. You can also access her full letter here.
The CPS Wellness Committee is looking for family representatives to be part of the committee. The committee is also working with CMS and CHS administrators to find student volunteers. Having family and students voice at the meetings will strengthen the work of the committee.
The committee is currently made up of teachers, nurses, administrators, food service, and a school committee member. The committee meets four times a year to review policy and procedures and chose focus areas to enhance wellness throughout the schools. The district received a grant from DESE which has provided a Wellness Coach for last year and continues into this year.
If you are interested in being part of the Wellness Committee please contact Dr. Scollins at lscollins@cohassetk12.org.
Keeping the Joy (happenings at Deer Hill)
- Thank you to the PSO for the wonderful lunch that you provided all staff last Friday. There is no better day to not have to pack a lunch than the one after Open House night!
- You may remember from our first newsletter of the year that Blake Martini was collecting notes and cards for local senior citizens as part of his volunteer work for his National Honors Society application. We had a wonderful outpouring from Deer Hill students. See a few pics below.
- Sarah Pennypacker, author of the Pax and Clementine books, offered our 4th and 5th grade readers and writers wise words of advice through a virtual author's visit on Tuesday. She stated that there is power in writing thoughts, feelings, and reactions down to be shared with a trusted audience, a large audience, or not shared at all! These writings can be fictionalized or written as fact. Additionally, she reminded readers to read everything, as it helps them find their voice and their passions.
- It was a doubleheader of virtual author visits! Many classes were visited by Sarah Albee, author of Fairy Tale Science, who shared her love of inquiry based scientific discovery by asking questions related to fairy tales. In the tale of Goldilocks, was it possible for one bowl to cool faster because of the size of the bowl? Ms. Albee encouraged students to investigate using their knowledge of thermal energy and surface area. Likewise, was Cinderella's pumpkin the most efficient vegetable to use as a carriage? Why not build some veggie cars and time them going down an inclined plane? This talk had students thinking about how mass affects the kinetic energy of the vehicles. Many thanks to Buttonwood Books for hosting both of these authors!
- The PSO hosted a fabulous Book Fair at Deer Hill on Wednesday. There was a strong turnout of eager readers (and possibly snow cone lovers)!
- Many thanks to Missy Parfumorse, Rae Miscioscia, and the bus drivers from our transportation department for the bus evacuation assemblies and drills they led for Deer Hill students on Thursday. We have high expectations for not only bus safety but safe behavior from our students. The Skipper Creed is an important part of bus ridership.
- The PSO Fun Run is almost here! You will receive a letter with detailed information in your child's backpack. Additionally, you may get information on the PSO Fun Run page.
