American Graduate
An initiative supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which is public media’s commitment to support community-based solutions to the dropout crisis. KET has joined forces with more than 80 public radio and television stations and over 1,000 partners and at-risk schools across 30 states in this effort.
KET'S American Graduate website hosts a variety of resources that address the dropout crisis and improve education from early childhood to career. Some of these resources are:
- Dropping Back In- a four-part series produced by KET which tells the inspiring stories of dropouts who are dropping back in and the people and programs helping them on the path to college and career success.
- Fast Forward- a service featuring self-paced online courses in math, language arts, science, and social studies with tools to help individuals seeking to earn their GED. Because Fast Forward is based on national high school standards, the courses are also great prep for other tests including HiSET® and TASC.
Safe and Sound: Raising Emotionally Healthy Children in a Stressful World- This KET documentary Looks at how childhood adversity impacts both the individual and society.
- PBS Learning Media- Resources in this service described in detail elsewhere in this S'more are highlighted. Some resources highlighted here are the (Pre-K -1) Everyday Learning collection and the (5-8) Math at the Core collection.

Take a look at some of the new features of this service which houses around 100,000 instructional resources including images, videos, audio files, articles, and interactives.
This overview looks mainly at two new features, the QuickList, and Board Builder.
(Note: You must have a Discovery account to look at the service and you will need your school's "passcode" to create one. To obtain this passcode either check with your building or district technology coordinator or contact me via email with your school name and I will send it to you. )
This new handy feature of Discovery Ed. allow you to quickly "bookmark where resources are located by putting them in a "thumbnail filmstrip" display at the bottom of the webpage. This allows you to pull that resource up quickly or even drag the resource into a board builder board you are constructing. Once in the quicklist the resource can also be placed in "My Content" , other builder tools, or assigned to a class or student. It is so quick and easy!
If you have ever used web tools like Glogster© or Padlet©, then you know the value of being able to quickly and easily create a single page website that you can then load with a variety of multimedia content. Boardbuilder allows you to do this within the Discovery service. You can drag videos, images, and other content to the board from your quicklist, access it from your My Content folders, link to other websites independent of Discovery, and even upload original files of many formats including videos, powerpoints, flash animations, etc. You can even attach files to the board for others to download. You can also search for boards created by other users. This is truly an awesomely flexible tool which both students and teachers can use. Explore it today!
Here is a link to a board I have constructed as an example. (Note: You must have a Discovery account to be able to access this or any board within the service.)
KET Distance Learning Classes
KET Distance Learning students enjoy the independence of online classes with the personal attention of dedicated teachers and tutors. KET DL has been a trusted provider of standards-based, media-rich courses to middle and high school students in Kentucky and throughout the nation since 1989, and we are growing in exciting ways with new courses, multimedia resources, and digital learning tools.
Honors Physics offers interactive virtual labs to help students master concepts. German, Latin, Chinese, and Spanish courses include culture and history lessons, and have tutors who speak the languages with students. Arts in Culture which teaches history and appreciation of visual and performing arts, uses high quality video to illustrate concepts.
Virtual Physics Labs
Try our Virtual Physics Lab program, and change how you teach and how your students learn! Our 21 pieces of virtual apparatus are great for introductory exploration, concept development, and application activities. And because they're always "set up," you can easily do authentic, "That's a great question. Let's go to the lab and see" investigations.
Most of our virtual apparatus is designed to simulate real physical equipment and, in most cases, to extend it. Since it's all available 365/24/7 online, your students can use the labs for activities outside of normal class time. These activities can even be embedded into homework.
