Director's Details - Week 12
Classical Conversations of Burien
“God made us: invented us as a man invents an engine. A car is made to run on fuel, and it would not run properly on anything else. Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other. That is why it is just no good asking God to make us happy in our own way without bothering about religion. God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there.” —C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
I pray that you are able to enjoy a week of giving thanks with your family. I hope you are filled to full with the blessing of being together and focusing on the many things we each have for which to be thankful. Enjoy the turkey and fixings too...
One more week and we will the officially finished half of the year. Amazing! In the midst of focusing on this year of learning, please also begin to pray for the 2016-17 school year. Registration is around the corner and many people are praying through exciting possibilities for the year to come. Some things to keep in prayer:
1. Decisions for each family in our current community
2. A Challenge A director/tutor for our community as well as a few more students, specifically for that age group
2. Potential new communities and the people who are praying about directing
3. Tutors to mentor and lead us in learning next year
4. For Beverly Park Baptist...that they will continue to welcome us to use their facility and that we will be a blessing to them.
If you have ever had a thought about what it would be like to tutor, consider joining our leadership team this spring as a substitute. We will need a few extra parents who are willing to step up, in case of illness or holiday travel. I know you are all capable. If you feel the nudge, please speak with me and consider joining our next tutor meeting to get the inside scoop.
As you learn and rest this week, remember that curriculum is not the books or resources but the living, breathing relationship you are building with your children. Carry on, CC Burien!

Christmas PJ Brunch/Mid-Year Review Party
Our last "official" week of CC before Christmas is December 3. However, I have reserved the church for the morning of December 10 for a Mid-Year Memory Master Review and PJ Party Brunch. I am looking for a team of party and game planners to help me organize this event. This is two parts:
1. Organizing a sign up for a potluck brunch and
2. Planning and implementing review games for the community. We will review the first 12 weeks of the memory work. We'll plan for 7 stations - 1 for each area of memory work. The classes will move through the stations, playing the games at each one. They will receive some kind of passport and get stamps for each station. This is meant to be a low stress/grace filled opportunity to review our memory work. For those who may be planning to attempt Memory Master, we may plan for a more challenging review.
Please let me know if you would like to participate in the planning of this fun event!

Geography Map Tracing Challenge!
When? October 29 - February 11
Why? To sharpen our map skills AND to raise money for local international families
**There will be a jar and a folder for tallying maps drawn. Please tally for every 5 cents earned per map and put one corn kernel per 5 cents in the jar. You may submit your maps or keep them. We will also have a map of Africa where we will color in a country for each dollar earned. Please track your own child's progress. If your child is receiving donations from someone besides me, track that with tally marks and corn kernels but keep the funds until I announce that we will be submitting the donation.
Foundations to Challenge Connection - Week 11
This week in Foundations, your children are memorizing some very basic points about the history of Islam. In Challenge IV, students will read books like Mere Christianity and Jesus Among Other Gods as they study world history and theology. As the capstone to their home education, they will learn to understand and share their beliefs.

Memory Master Details
1. This should be done for God's glory not our selfish pride (as parents or kids). This is a great opportunity to do some character building - humility, diligence, perseverance...
2. You can end the process any time. If you only make it through one parent proof, it is still a reason for celebration. Celebrate each step along the way. The capacity God has given us for memory and learning is amazing . Every endeavor to learn our memory work is "training our brains to retain."
While in the past some communities have celebrated mastery specific subjects, CC has asked that we do not do this. Memory Master is a difficult challenge and we want to respect those that put their all into learning the whole thing. However, you are welcome to celebrate within your family any mastery your child achieves. I'd love to hear about it also. I want to celebrate these successes with you. We simply aren't able to provide special acknowledgment at the End of the Year Ceremony.
If you, as a parent, are interested in attempting the process, we will gladly celebrate your efforts and successes with you. CC policy encourages parents to try it but does not require that we commit our tutors or directors to help with the proofing process for parents. That said, I will gladly do a director proof for any adult who wishes to attempt it.
Prayer Requests
2. Pray for Beverly Park Baptist Church and Pastor Josh's family, specifically. They had a burglary at the church last week and several guitars were stolen. Some belonged to pastor Josh but he sounded more concerned about one belonging to a young teen musician. Also, Pastor Josh's infant son was hospitalized with RSV and bronchiolitis last week. He was released on Wednesday and is recovering, but I know prayers would be greatly appreciated.
