Raider Nation Round-Up
To LRHS Juniors and Seniors from the College Counselor
WHAT SENIORS SHOULD BE DOING NOW
-Applying for scholarships! Check out the bulletin board in the Counseling Office for local scholarship opportunities as well as Naviance under "Colleges" and "Scholarships and Money". Scholarships have deadlines just like colleges so make sure that you get your materials in on time or you most likely will be disqualified. If you need something like a letter of recommendation or a transcript, make sure you are giving adults at least 2 weeks to get those things together for you!
-See the attached document for financial aid resources and links!
-For students who were identified via email and postal letter regarding the GA Grant through the State of MD, all documentation is due by April 1st through the postal mail! If you do not submit all of the items on your to-do list in your MDCaps account by that date, you will forfeit the money! See Ms. Campbell immediately with any help needed and if you wish for Ms. Campbell to mail out your documents for you.
-For students who have been admitted to a college, you should be receiving your financial aid packages from the college soon! Read them CAREFULLY and realize that colleges often calculate student and parent loans into the equation, even if that was not your plan! See the sheet below on how to understand your award letter.
-Interested in attending CCBC in the Fall? Sign up on Naviance for the CCBC Instant Admissions Day or email your counselor or Ms. Campbell to sign you up.
-Still interested in attending a 4 year college but missed the deadline? Consider applying to a school with rolling admissions. These schools accept students as the applications come in until a particular date or they have reached their quota of students for their freshman class. https://www.niche.com/colleges/search/top-rolling-admissions-colleges/s/maryland/
-Lockheed Martin Vocational Scholarship for students interested in pursuing an associates degree or certificate. Deadline is March 12th at 3 pm. Apply here: https://learnmore.scholarsapply.org/lmvocational/
-American Landscape Institute scholarship program - receive on the job training while taking college courses and earn a 2 year certificate in Landscape Installation, Maintenance and Design. Deadline is March 1st. Apply here: http://www.americanlandscapeinstitute.com
-BCRSPA Scholarship - Six $2000 scholarships available. Deadline is February 21st. Apply here: http://www.bcrspa.org
-MAESP Scholarship for those interested in teaching elementary school. Deadline is February 21st. See scholarship below.
What Juniors Should Be Doing Now
-PRACTICE FOR THE SAT! Make sure you are ready for the SAT and take it seriously! Use Khan Academy for preparation which is linked up in your College Board account. 20 hours of practice = an average score raise of 115 points!
-Visit colleges! Now is a great time to hit up some Spring Open Houses or schedule a tour while college is in session. See below for some local Open Houses and college events.
-Consider and sign up for what you will do this summer to boost your resume - A volunteer activity? A part-time job? A summer camp? See below for ideas...
-Please email Ms. Campbell at mailto:email@example.com if you are in need of a Naviance code so that you can follow your child's progress on Naviance.
