Ag in the Classroom
Vermilion County Farm Bureau
Ag Literacy Coordinator
My name is Missy Buhr and I am so excited to be the new Ag Literacy Coordinator for Vermilion County! I was born and raised on a hog farm in south central Indiana, where my family also grew corn, wheat, and soybeans; not to mention cows, chickens, children and the occasional pet. After graduating from college, I married my husband Andy, and we now live on a grain farm in rural Gifford with our two children.
I have been a second grade classroom teacher for six years and have over seven years experience at the preschool level. I am looking forward to combining two important roles that I love—agriculture and teaching.
I am eager to share this adventure with your students and look forward to meeting you very soon!
Cheers!
Exploding Corn
Popcorn is a treat that many of us love. But what exactly causes it to pop? Where did it come from? What types of corn can be used to create this tasty snack? Join us as we adventure through the amazing world of exploding corn.

FREE Teacher Resources
Class Presentations are a great way to incorporate topics into class discussion with little to no additional work for the teacher. These lessons activities are planned, supported, and instructed by the Ag Literacy Coordinator. (Recommended for kindergarten through 5th grade.)
Thematic Units are boxed lessons that come with most supplies a teacher would need to provide a hands on learning opportunity to their students. Topics range from Illinois agricultural themes to hydroponics and machinery. These kits can be checked out for two weeks at a time while the larger kits are a 4 week period. (Recommended for kindergarten through 8th grade)
Learning Barn is a hands on, interactive storage barn filled with games, puzzles, books, and educational opportunities for our youngest audiences. (Recommended for preschool through 1st grade.)
Ag Mags are a 4 page, colorful agriculture magazine for students. They contain information about agriculture topics, photographs, classroom activities and careers. Many of these printed resources are also available in an interactive format.

Life Cycle Units
*To allow for more classes to participate, each class will only be allowed ONE of the life cycle units, with only one of each type in a building.
