Big picture

Greetings, Mustang Families!

I hope everyone is enjoying the March snow day. March can be a stressful time in school as we look forward to our upcoming Spring Break. Tempers and tensions tend to be higher than normal. Hopefully students are taking some time on this extra day off to relax, take a break from social media and screen time, and do some self-care.

Review of the Week

It was wonderful to see so many families last night at Spring Conferences. If you were unable to attend conferences, please check in to the parent portal to review your students grades and reach out to teachers with any concerns.

We had one of the Optimist Speech Breakfasts this week at the Auburn Hills Community Center. Our AMS students did a wonderful job and their optimism is contagious. Shout out to these students who truly make AMS great!

We celebrated support staff this week with student notes and treats. Our support staff provide much needed services to help days run smoothly.

We sent several faculty and staff to Restorative Practices training. This training will help our building build our restorative capacity and positive climate and culture.

Preview of Upcoming Events

There is an important message included in the newsletter from Dr. Schwarz regarding our new weapons detection system. Please make sure you read and understand this new addition to our safety and security plan.

It's also time to sign up for the Washington DC trip. Current 7th graders can attend the trip in the fall. This is absolutely one of my favorite experiences every year. This is a wonderful compliment to the US History curriculum and every time I go, I learn new things! It is an experience that all students should have. We are also looking for parent chaperones. Let’s fill these buses! More information is included below.

Next week we will have our AMS Theater Co. production of Transylmania on Thursday and Friday at 7pm. Come see the hard work of our Avondale theater team.

March 24th is the end of the 3rd quarter. Students need to submit their work for grading by the end of the day on March 21st.

The Best Thing

The best thing this week was when a student in one of our basic classrooms, who is almost completely non-verbal, called me “Doc”. I was so excited to see such growth and to marvel at the amazing progress that is being made at Avondale Middle School.

Respectfully,

Katie Gomez

From Avondale Superintendent Dr. James Schwarz

The following is an update to information that I previously shared about our plans to install weapons detection gates at each of our schools’ main entrances, within the vestibules before entering into the offices.

OPENGATE Weapons Detection Overview

  • Provides an additional layer of security.
  • Used by other school districts in Oakland County who report that the gates are minimally intrusive and cause few delays at the start of the school day when the entrances experience the most traffic.
  • Also used at Ford Field, Little Caesar’s Arena, and concert venues (capable of quickly checking large crowds).
  • The units do not use x-ray or technology that would provide harmful exposure to any form of rays.
  • The units are portable so they can be used at other entry points both inside and outside as needed.
  • Signs near the gates will provide instructions for passing through the gates.
  • It will not be necessary to remove coats, backpacks, purses etc. except if the gate signals that it has detected something that should be examined more closely. In that case, the person will be led to a separate area so that their belongings can be examined.
  • ALL visitors to ALL Avondale schools will be required to pass through the gates before allowance into any school office.
  • We are expecting to complete the installation of the weapons detection gates in the main entryways of all of our schools by the time our staff and students return from Spring Break on Monday, April 3rd.

The decision to install the gates was not an easy one as we were concerned (as you may be) about the impact the presence of the gates will have upon our students and staff and the overall environment of teaching and learning in our buildings, attempting to balance comfortability and security. It is a painful reality that we are in a time that necessitates that schools – places that should be considered safe havens – are compelled to add layers of security in order to keep students and staff who walk through their doors free from harm.

Let us know if you have any questions and please see your building administrator’s protocols specific to your child’s school below.

Sincerely,
Dr. James Schwarz

Introducing the MUSTANG BOOSTERS!!!!

AMS has been very fortunate to have had some outstanding PTO groups. In the spirit of that tradition we are rebranding our PTO to the MUSTANG BOOSTERS! This will be a group of volunteer parents and teachers collaboratively working to promote and support the outstanding groups, teams, clubs and school initiatives we have.

Please email Mrs. Robin Bovensiep at rrbovensiep@gmail.com to have your name added to the list. We hope to see you there!

CONGRATULATIONS AMS Educator of the Year - Ms. Amanda Mulka!

AMS Principal, Dr. Gomez had this to say about Ms. Mulka, "Amanda is the perfect example of everything Avondale. I have had the privilege of knowing her for many years. She has spent her whole life as part of the Avondale community. Amanda has always been a leader amongst her peers. I first got to know her as a student on my Student Advisory Council and an athlete on my cheerleading team. Flash forward 20 years and I have gotten to know Amanda as a teaching and coaching partner.

Amanda came back to start her teaching career in Avondale and it was evident from the start that this is where she belongs and she will always be willing to go above and beyond to help kids. She started coaching cheerleading at the high school level as an assistant coach and now coaches competitive cheerleading at the middle school. She has put in countless hours to make sure that these girls become the best they can be, not only as athletes but as responsible human beings. She pushes them beyond their comfort zone and teaches them how to be leaders.

Amanda is a role model for other teachers as she continues to put in many hours to improve her craft, training in Project Based Learning and attending the Galileo Teacher Leadership Academy. She encourages collaboration amongst her peers and continues to lead by example. Amanda shares new, creative and innovative ideas for learning with her teaching partners and strives to find the best strategies to help our students at all levels."

Congratulations again Ms. Mulka on this well-deserved honor!

Ms. Mulka will go on to represent Avondale at the County Level Middle School Educator of the Year.

New AMS Smart Pass System

A few weeks ago, AMS began using the digital hall pass system SmartPass. SmartPass replaces traditional hall passes such as sign-out sheets, wooden blocks, passbooks, and lanyards.

It provides administrators an accounting of which students are outside of the classroom during the school day. In case of emergencies such as fires, severe weather, or building intruders, administrators have real-time access to this critical information. Overall, the pass history of a student will lead to more effective and informative parent-teacher conferences, as well as ensuring students are where they should be - in the classroom learning.

Students and staff can access SmartPass from their school-provided device or from their personal mobile device at www.smartpass.app/login.

For more information, please visit the SmartPass website www.smartpass.app.

Free Resource for Parents

In November, our administrators attended the K-12 Wellness Conference at Oakland Schools. The conference was packed with state, county, and local leaders all there to learn how to support our students and their families.

We want to share a valuable and trusted resource with you that we learned about at the conference: https://parentguidance.org

This is a free source for parenting support that is full of information and education to help you support your student and address tough issues they may be dealing with.

Submit Yearbook Photos

Please use this form to submit ANY and ALL photos from events at AMS during the 2022-2023 school year. The best part about the Yearbook is having a variety of pictures to look back on to create an authentic, memorable publication. Please include any after-school activity, sporting event, in-class project or assignment, field trip, etc.
