STAR BUCKS HOLIDAY MUSICAL ~ 3rd and 4th Grade
Parents of 4th (and 3rd) graders,
On Thursday, December 8, in the West Newton gym, the 3rd and 4th grade students will be presenting a holiday musical called, "Star Bucks, the Musical". It will be at 6:00p and should last about 45 minutes. ALL 3rd and 4th grade students will be involved in this musical, and it will be a wonderful opportunity to join in some holiday fun all together again! I have created an announcement on Canvas that has links to song files, the script, and a student score. Students should go to the 4th grade Music course, find "announcements" in the menu, and look for the announcement called, "Star Bucks, the Musical" and that is where they can find everything they will need, in order to listen to the music at home, and get (and stay) familiar with the music and script.
There will be opportunities for students to audition for a small selection of speaking roles. We will accomplish that in an informal way during Music class. I will have interested students read lines in the script for the different parts and I will be looking for volume, clarity of speech, speaking slowly, inflection, and ability to memorize lines. If your student is selected, I will let the families know and ask for their permission for the student to have a special part.
I encourage all students to dress in holiday style for our program. That might mean a special holiday outfit, reindeer headband, festive scarf, or whatever puts them in the holiday spirit! Students chosen for specialty speaking parts will need to obtain a costume, of which I have a very small selection and I'm willing to loan those out to the students who may fit them.
If you have any questions about our upcoming performance, please feel free to respond to this message, or email me at dstebbe@decaturproud.org - I'll be happy to answer your questions!

PASSION PROJECT FUNDRAISER
Hi! My name is Kaitlyn Brown and I am an Elementary Education major at the University of Indianapolis. I will be conducting my student teaching at West Newton Elementary School this upcoming spring semester. Part of my student teaching experience is to develop a passion project that gives back to the community. Music has always been one of my great passions growing up and I believe that music offers an opportunity to engage children academically, socially, and creatively.
My passion project is to raise money to acquire musical instruments and resources for the West Newton’s music program. During the holiday concert family and friends are encouraged to participate in a raffle of various gifts and events. I hope that the new instruments and resources brought into the music room will help students find their passion for music.
Please plan on participating in this fundraising event on December 8th to help support your child and the children of West Newton Elementary.

NO SMOKING / NO VAPING POLICY
Decatur Township School Police Department, (DTSPD), in collaboration with the Drug Free Coalition, is excited to offer a new diversion program for students found to be in possession of tobacco products,
e-cigarettes, and or vaping devices. DTSPD has also partnered with our local courts in an effort to minimize the use of these products and devices on our campuses. Our students, if found with the aforementioned items, would be in violation of Indiana Code 35-46-1-10.5, Minor in Possession of a Tobacco Product or an Electronic Cigarette or 7.1-5-12-8 Smoking in a Prohibited Area. Each of these would be met with an Indiana citation, also known as a “Uniform Traffic Ticket,” (UTT). When submitted to the courts, the cost of the ticket for this violation is $170.50. This is an actual ticket and will affect your license or the ability to obtain one if left unpaid. Our objective however, is not to create financial hardship, but to have an opportunity to educate students and families on the dangers of vaping and tobacco products. Twice per month, DTSPD officers will present a 1-hour class for students who have opted to accept the terms of the diversion program. The cost of the class for a student attending alone is $75.00. If a student attends the class with a parent or guardian, the class is discounted at a cost of $25.00. Upon the completion of the class, the UTT, or citation, will not be referred to the courts, and there will be no record of the violation. A student may only participate in the program once per school year, and only twice throughout their entire school career.
