Learner Profile:
Our next learner profile trait is thinker. We will be watching for students who think critically & creatively to recognize and approach complex problems and then make reasoned/ethical decisions.
Language Workshop/Reading Workshop:
We are continuing our Language Workshop unit called Identities. Students learned about the man who invented the doughnut in The Whole Story of the Doughnut. Next week we will learn about a new person and what makes them famous. In reading workshop, we have been learning how to pick out the main idea and supporting details in a nonfiction text. Students would benefit from continued practice with this skill as they do their independent reading.
Writing Workshop:
Students are continuing their research on a famous person of their choice. They have been very busy taking notes and/or starting to write their rough draft. Recently lessons have focused on writing both a topic and concluding sentence as well as turning their notes into “stretched out” sentences for their rough draft.
Math:
Our 3rd grade units on the 4 operations have come to a close. Students should continue to practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division basic facts for fluency so they can comfortably apply them to future units. That means they know their facts quickly and accurately. A good time to do this is through the weekly math log.
This week we started the Geometry unit. Students will focus their learning on 2 dimensional shapes. First they will learn the important attributes/properties of shapes. Then they will need to be able to identify and draw shapes by their attributes/properties. Finally they will need to sort shapes by those attributes/properties. This unit will only last about 2 weeks so anticipate an assessment coming again on Thursday, February 8th. Here are some helpful links for a quick rundown.

Science:
We are finishing up our science unit on Force and Motion with a “Rocket Challenge”. Students will be working in small groups to create a rocket and test it to see how far it goes. Student will be given time to revise their design and test it once again. Thank you to all of you who were able to send in materials for this project.
Second Step:
Next week our lesson will be about making friends. The lesson will focus on being able to make conversation. This is an important skill students can use to build friendships at school.
Conferences:
Parent Teacher conferences are coming up on Wednesday, February 15th and Wednesday, February 21st from 4:30-8:00. Please watch for the sign up genius links coming soon from Mrs. Sweet.
**A reminder to the parents of Mrs. Hempel’s and Mrs. Pilo’s students that you are to sign up with the teacher you did not meet with last fall. For example, Mrs. Hempel will be meeting with Mrs. Pilo’s homeroom students this time since she met with her homeroom students last fall.
