Shimek Shout Out

May 10, 2019

May 10, 2019

Dear Shimek Family,

As the 2018-19 school year is drawing to an end, I want to take a moment to welcome you to the 2019-20 school year! We have some very exciting changes to announce!

To begin, I think our whole community is aware that two of our long-time Shimek teachers will be retiring at the end of the year. If you haven’t already, please make time to congratulate Geri Kachingwe & Steve Sproule on their wonderful careers. They have done so much for our children and community and they will be missed! As a reminder, there will be a retirement celebration held for them in the Shimek Library on Thursday, May 23rd from 3:45-5:45pm.

As a reminder, our last day of classes for the current year will be held on May 31st, ending at 10:55am. This fun day will be preceded by a number of wonderful activities, including our annual family picnic and 6th grade graduation on May 30th. More details can be found in the newsletter.

Looking ahead to next year, I anticipate that our classroom teachers will be:

Kindergarten - Ms. Kalsem

First Grade - Mrs. Buxton & Mrs. Muhlenbruch

Second Grade - Mrs. Anderson

Third Grade - Mrs. Schneider

Fourth Grade - Mrs. Chapman

Fifth Grade - Mrs. Skay

Sixth Grade - Ms. Cordova & Ms. Mueller

New to the Shimek community this year, I plan on posting class lists for the 2019-20 school year at 4:00pm on Thursday, May 30th. The following day, students will have the chance to ‘fly-up’ and meet with next year’s classroom teacher. I should add that for next year’s first and sixth grades, as we would with any grade that needed to split students, we have a very thorough process we go through to try and balance classes and to set each of our students up for future success.

Next, most are aware that the Iowa City Homeschool Assistance Program (ICHSAP) will be relocating from the former Roosevelt Elementary School to a modern 6-Plex structure on the Shimek Elementary property in order to accommodate the program’s needs. In addition to my role as the Shimek Elementary Principal, I will also take on the site-level leadership role for the ICHSAP. I anticipate reopening the homeschool office with secretary (and Shimek parent) Emily Minnie on August 16th.

In closing, as we head into the summer months, we would like to remind all families that eRegistration in PowerSchool will begin in early August. If any support is needed, Amy and I will be in the office together starting on the district’s registration day, August 5th. In the meantime, if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas to share please feel free to reach out to me or any one of our wonderful Shimek staff members!

All my best to you and your family!

Most sincerely,

Chris Pisarik

We are so proud of our girls in [3rd-5th or 3rd-6th] grades who participated in Girls on the Run at [School] this season!

Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Over the 10-week season, girls explored and discussed their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age and developed strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. Through it, they also made new friends, built their confidence and celebrated all that makes them unique. Physical activity is woven into the program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. The girls participated in the Girls on the Run 5K in Iowa City on April 27th. This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience of the curriculum. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible IS possible.

Fall season will begin the week of September 2nd. Practices are led by volunteer, trained coaches, who have all successfully completed a background check. (School) is looking for additional coaches to ensure that our girls will have an opportunity to participate in this transformative program next season. Learn more and register as a coach at or contact Girls on the Run at
