Gratitude is the American Indian Way of Life
In this lesson, students learned to identify the Native American cultural value of giving thanks and gift giving as a form of gratitude. The lesson opened by having students draw a gift they thought a friend would like, then the friend looked at the gift, and we discussed feelings and how we felt, which led to an awareness and definition of thoughtfulness. After reading a short article called, “Celebrating our Friendships through Gifts,” the class participated in a group discussion. To wrap up the lesson, we listed 10 people or things we are grateful for, and we will create cards to share our gratitude.
