Dear Families,
Happy New Year!
I hope everyone was able to relax and enjoy Winter Break. Virtual learning has resumed and I have been happy to see students' faces in class! Teachers will be taking time to review routines and procedures this week.
If you were unable to stop by and pick up your child's materials during the week of December 14th, you can call anytime between 8:00 - 4:00 to arrange to pick it up at the office. We will probably have another supply distribution at the end of January, and we will notify families when we have dates and times.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Dr. Wilson
CELEBRATIONS
El Sol Elementary Students Accept Holiday Challenge
On Friday, January 8th, Terry Gay and Jasmine Gomez-Sarmiento, 2nd grade co-teachers at El Sol Elementary, loaded the car with pizzas and delivered them to contest winners. Students were challenged to complete 100 Lexia minutes and 20 Dreambox lessons over Winter Break. Four students, Mia Ray, Izaiah Skelding-Ortiz, Alexis Bakalyar, and Mariangela Corrales Jara completed the challenge and were surprised at their doorstep with their teachers personally delivering a pizza to them. Thanks to the parents for keeping it a secret! It was so rewarding for students and their teachers to connect in person.
2nd Grade Holiday Challenge Winners: Top Left: Mariangela Corrales Jara, Top Right: Izaiah Skelding Ortiz, Bottom Left: Alexis Bakalyar, Bottom Right: Mia Ray. Congratulations, and keep up the good work!
COMMUNITY CONNECTION
K-12 Connect Virtual Tutoring - Available for English and Spanish!
GVSU K-12 Connect Virtual Tutoring is available for any student in grades K-12 beginning. This program is a free, virtual 1:1 tutoring/homework support service in which students can harness additional learning support through connecting with university students, faculty, or staff with expertise in various subjects through Zoom. Whether you are looking for a one-time appointment or recurring, weekly sessions, the tutoring center can accommodate any student's tutoring needs.
Students must bring homework or content to work on to every tutoring session.
Currently, K-12 Connect offers tutoring in the following subject areas and grade levels:
- Language: Spanish (K-12), Mandarin Chinese (K-12), German (6-12)
- Math (K-12)
- English Language Arts (K-12)
- Science (K-12)
- Social Studies (K-12)
- NEW: Targeted Literacy Project (1-4)
- The Targeted Literacy Project (TLP) is a pilot program aimed at supporting students in grades 1-4 who are a year or more behind in reading. To participate, sign up for a consultation where your student will be assessed to verify eligibility. If eligible, your student will be required to meet four times each week for 30 minutes with a TLP tutor. A parent or guardian must be present at the initial consultation.
