A Message from the Social Counselor....
Greetings Dream Team!
I hope you all are having an amazing week! It is good to be back and I know we are looking forward to winter break. As the holidays approach, this is the time that we gather together and celebrate. This is also a time when families remember their loved ones. This school year we have had scholars report losing someone close to them. The holidays can be a difficult time as there are so many precious memories that bring out many emotions. I encourage us all to be mindful of this and I have provided some tips below on how we can support our scholars.
Tip #1: Be understanding and tolerant of common grief reactions which include: decreased appetite, difficulty sleeping, a decreased ability to concentrate, increased sadness, and social withdrawal. (Please alert me if you see any of these symptoms.)
Tip #2: Express your own feelings in an open, calm, and appropriate way that encourages students to share their feelings and grief.
Tip #3: Keep in mind that some children may have a difficult time expressing their feelings or may not feel comfortable talking at school. Do not pressure these students to talk. Some may prefer writing, drawing, listening to music, or playing a game instead of talking about their feelings. Provide students with a variety of options for expressing grief.
Tip #4: Be sensitive to cultural differences of students and their families in expressing grief and honoring the dead.
Tip #5: If you find yourself overwhelmed by the information shared, please come speak with me. My door is always open. I am also happy to help you with any additional counseling resources if needed.
Additionally, the Aim for Success presentation is scheduled for Friday, February 8th (8th Grade Only). Parents will have the opportunity to view the program on Wednesday, January 16th at 7:15pm. More information will be available in the coming weeks. Please reach out with any questions that you have.
Thank you all for the amazing work that you do!
Best,
Kelsi Jackson
