This is Empathy: Mental Health Week runs May 2-8

Mental Health Week takes place May 2-8. To mark the week, Sherwood Heights has a series of activities and lessons planned for students, all centered on Mental Health Week’s theme, “This is Empathy”—particularly fitting, especially this year. Empathy helps connect us, feel less isolated, and shows us how we can help others.

Collectively, students will learn when we do something good for others, we lift both their spirits and our own. In addition to school activities, students and staff can also share messages about empathy and kindness on various social media platforms using the hashtag #GetReal.

Upcoming Performing Arts Shows and Ticket Information

Big picture

Performing Arts 8 - Bottle of Joy

This delightful children’s play takes place in the far off land of the Kingdom of Happy where... well, everybody’s happy! Everybody, that is, except the evil Count Cringe and his equally evil assistant Purvis. What brings such happiness to the lucky residents of this kingdom? Waldo the Wizard’s magic bottle of joy! King Har Har keeps the main supply of this magic potion in a large corked bottle, and the town’s inhabitants each refill their own little bottles once a year. Loaded with puns and plenty of witty verbal banter to entertain all ages, you will cringe when Count Cringe attempts to destroy the bottle of joy with his sad ray!
Big picture

Performing Arts 9 - Goldilocks on Trial

Amanda Marie Locks, known as Goldilocks or even “Goldie,” is on trial for breaking and entering and destruction of private property. Fairytale characters serve as witnesses for the prosecuting and defense attorneys. To hear the Bare family tell it, Goldie should be found guilty. But an unscrupulous judge and a slew of unreliable witnesses — including a blind witch, a forgetful old woman who lives in a shoe, a dwarf with a nasty disposition, a skittish tuffet-tester, and a country boy so dumb he’d trade beans for a cow — make it hard to build a case against the gal with the golden hair. With so much conflicting testimony, no wonder the results are courtroom chaos!

Tickets can be purchased through the Parent Portal on PowerSchool under the ‘Fees’ section. There will be 4 different show options. Either Bottle of Joy or Goldilocks on Trial and the showtimes. Each play has 2 showtimes at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The night of the show you will tell us your name and how many tickets you purchased! There will not be any physical tickets exchanged.

Student Transportation: 2022-23 Registration is Now Open

Planning to use Student Transportation in the 2022-23 school year? If so, make sure your child is registered so Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) can plan routes and send your child a bus pass before the first day of school.

All students who indicated needing transportation services through the returning student registration process are now registered. Families registered will received tentative route schedules and invoices by the end of the month—fees are due June 30, 2022.

For those students who didn’t indicate needing transportation service through the pre-enrolment process and want to now register, simply contact EIPS Student Transportation at 780-417-8151 or email st@eips.ca.

For more information about EIPS Student Transportation visit www.eips.ca/transportation.

Spread the Word: EIPS is Hiring Substitute Educational Assistants

Do you know someone who’s great at working with children and youth and eager to support student learning? Someone who’s looking for a flexible schedule and variety in their day-to-day tasks? Spread the word! Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is hiring substitute educational assistants (EA) to work on a casual, on-call basis supporting all school locations.

EAs are integral to the school team, assisting teachers with instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom and other school activities. Whether it’s working one-on-one with individual students or with a small group of students in a class or special program, EAs provide support and assistance to help students achieve success. Substitute EAs are critical to ensuring the continuity of student learning each and every day.

Substitute EAs are needed to fill positions until the end of the school year. If you know someone who’d be great in this role, encourage them to apply today.

Kudos for a SWH Staff Member

On behalf of the Sherwood Heights School Council, thank you for helping us recognize our amazing staff for the wonderful work they do.

The Future of Masculinity Summit 2.0 is the second annual summit hosted by Next Gen Men and community partnership organizations. In this full-day virtual conference hosted on Discord, we’ll delve into where boys fit within the #MeToo social movement. Participants will explore why gender equality matters to them, what they’ve been told about how they should act within social justice movements, what they actually believe and how they can use these powerful insights to create change.

The world can be a very polarizing place these days—it can be very difficult to know where we fit within varying, strongly-felt opinions. We’re told if we don’t believe in x, that makes us y, and if we act any differently than how we’re supposed to, we may be subject to scrutiny. While all this is happening, society has forgotten about our boys—those who want to do the right thing but are afraid of being reprimanded, who feel dismissed and invalidated because of all the rigid narratives they hear.

Participants in this summit will experience a safe space to explore those narratives, the feelings associated with them, how they can find their own voice to speak their truth and what they can do to become change-makers in their own lives, relationships, and communities.

Virtual Family Gatherings

Many thanks to the families who joined us for our virtual gatherings this winter. It was a pleasure to reconnect with those who were part of the gatherings last year and to welcome new families to our virtual circle. We’re grateful for the conversation, the ideas shared and the feedback on work that’s happening throughout the Division. We look forward to seeing you all again next school year—hopefully in person at some point!

If there’s anything stemming from the gatherings you wish to discuss, please reach out to the lead teacher at your child’s school or someone from the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education team directly:

Planning for the 2022- 23 School Year

Treaty 6 and Métis Nation Flag Raising | June 13

If you’ve driven by EIPS Central Services recently, you may have noticed the addition of two new flag poles. As a further commitment on the path of truth telling toward reconciliation, and as an affirmation as Treaty partners, EIPS will be raising the Treaty 6 and Métis Nation flag on June 13. Each school in the Division will also display the two flags and are busy planning staff professional development and student learning experiences to understand the significance of each flag. More information on the Central Services ceremony and the specific events at each school will be shared in the near future.

Opening of Central Services Land-based Learning Space | June 21

EIPS has been working closely with Elder WIlson Bearhead to design and build a land-based learning space at EIPS Central Services. With spring on its way, construction will resume on the space. As part of Indigenous Peoples’ Day on June 21, EIPS will officially open the space, honour our ongoing relationship with Elder Wilson and affirm our commitment to deepen our relationship with the land that sustains us. We’ll share details of the opening event as the date draws closer.
