Pre-Planning for a Mental Health Crisis: The Road to Readiness
Taking the time in a non-crisis situation can help make a difficult situation less stressful. This workshop is designed to give families a step-by-step guide with tools, resources and strategies in order to be well-prepared for a mental health crisis involving their children. Have you thought about what you will do if your child needs to be screened for hospitalization due to unsafe behaviors or thoughts? What are your options and how will you plan in advance? Do you have a plan that is shared with friends, family, and/or emergency first responders? Learn about your options with the company of other parents and caregivers who have been there!

Wednesday, March 22, 2023 6:00 PM ET
The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) and SAMHSA are offering a virtual training for parents, caregivers, and families on the mental health needs of children!
ACF and SAMHSA are both committed to improving behavioral health (mental health and substance use) for children, youth, and families. As part of the agencies' ongoing behavioral health efforts, this March 22nd training aims to provide parents and caregivers with the information and resources to recognize, manage, and support their children’s mental health needs.
Parents and caregivers play a vital role in the lives of children, families, and communities. This training will provide parents and caregivers with tools and skills to support their children.
This event is free for all participants. Registration
Talk, They Hear You
Parents/caregivers, through connection and honest, open communication have the power to make an impact on the decisions and behaviors of their children. Through both talking and listening, monitoring and setting boundaries, and modeling, parents support healthy development. This is true, whether it relates to managing stress, using substances, texting while driving, solving problems or making other important decisions, and for young children, tweens, and adolescents.
Though we don't have specific data on elementary students, 90% of KPMS students reported having at least one parent or other adult outside of school to talk to about things that are important to them. 92% of KPHS students reported the same.*
SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, has launched the "Talk, They Hear You" mobile app to help adults gain skills and to use everyday occurrences to have conversations about important topics. The app also includes access to Screen4Success, a 10-minute screening tool parents can use to assess their child's health, wellness, and wellbeing.
The flyer will provide you additional information.
