Lights! Camera! Action! "The Red Carpet" Weekly Spotlight
Coming down the red carpet this week is our counselor, Mrs. B. Wilson! She wears many hats on our campus, and her enthusiasm to see the very best in our students and staff is evident in all the initiatives she leads! From leading our school wide implementation of morning meetings, to planning our very first 5th grade class trip, to leading our Attendance Matters activities, and the list goes on and on! We are extremely fortunate to have Mrs. B. Wilson's passion for building a very effective school counseling program on our campus!
Please join me in thanking Mrs. B. Wilson for her hard work, drive, and determination to helping us fulfill our mission of educating the whole child! The Spotlight this week is on her!
Excellence in Instruction: Visible Instructional Schedules and Data Walls
This week, our focus is on ensuring we have alignment across the campus in the following areas:
-Visible Instructional Schedules
-Data Walls
100% of our Guzick classrooms should have visible instructional schedules for the teacher and students to reference and data walls that should be updated at least every 6-weeks.
I have attached the walkthrough form that each teacher will receive with feedback regarding the above instructional expectations and other areas that are directly aligned to the classroom learning environment.
Please check out the pictures below of examples of excellence in instruction based on the classroom learning environment!

Morning Meeting - Building Postiive Relationships One Meeting at a Time!
From Mrs. B. Wilson:
Last week the ILT and I had the pleasure of participating in morning meetings across the campus. The feedback you receive will ensure that we are effectively implementing morning meetings school-wide.
Here are a things to consider:
1. In order to implement any new classroom activity successfully, it is important to model your expectations. Having clear expectations sets the stage for a successful morning meeting. Below you will find two anchor charts and a video to assist you in setting expectations for your meeting.
2. How are you tracking the completion of each component of the meeting (greeting, sharing, activity, message)? How will the person observing you know? Try using a slideshow or anchor chart as visual reminder.

REMINDER: September is Attendance Awareness Month
Please read the email excerpt from Mrs. B. Wilson:
On Tuesday the district's Attendance Awareness Month Competition begins. Week 1's theme is: Show Up! Team Up! Please wear a sports shirt or even a grade level team shirt on Wednesday, September 4th! Activities for the following weeks are on the attached flyer.
Dallas ISD is having a districtwide social media challenge(see the attached flyer). If you post any photos on social media(Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) use the hashtags #showupdallasisdGuzick #AwardwinningattendanceatGuzick . This is a great opportunity to highlight our campus and students, staff, and community.
Mrs. Maldonado and I will be recognizing classes weekly who have perfect attendance for the week. We have lots of fun rewards/activities planned for students with perfect attendance during September.
REMINDER: Guzick School wide Intervention Programs
We have two school wide intervention programs to proactively meet the academic needs of some of our Tier III students. To ensure that the entire staff can clearly communicate to parents how we meet the varied needs of our struggling students, details of each program are as follows:
Power Half Hour - Skill based intervention program in reading and mathematics that occurs during the school day. Students are explicitly taught basic reading and math skills to help close learning gaps. The program begins September 9, 2019 and continues throughout the school year. Student groups may change as students exit out of Tier III.
STAAR Bootcamp - After school intervention program for current 4th and 5th grade students who did not master the STAAR reading and/or math assessment in the previous school year. Students receive explicit instruction using readiness standards to help close the learning gap. The program begins September 3, 2019 and continues until the end of the second six-weeks grading period.
REMINDER: Morning Duty Expectatations - Starting the day with POSITIVITY
Morning Duty begins at 7:15am each morning. Please be in your morning duty location ready to receive and actively monitor our Guzick Giants! To ensure that we are ALWAYS striving for not just good enough, but being the absolute best, we are tweaking a few of our morning arrival procedures. Please provide feedback to myself or Mrs. Maldonado with how we can continue to ensure our students are embraced with positivity during morning arrival.
- Pre-K and Kinder will meet in the auditorium.
- First and Second grade will meet in the cafeteria.
- Third grade will meet in the gym.
- Fourth and Fifth grade will continue to meet on their respective hallway.
All students will need to be picked up no later than 7:40am each morning from their respective location.
We will encourage students who arrive after 7:35am to walk on the LEFT side of the hallway to avoid traffic jams.
