Benton Weekly Update
Week 20: January 18-22, 2021
Tuesday is an A Day this week!
Welcome back from the first 3-day weekend of the new semester.
WIth the many Monday holidays coming up, A days are disproportionately affected. With that in mind, Tuesday this week will be an A Day. This will happen again on Tuesday, February 16th.
Clubs! Clubs! Clubs! We may be in distance learning, but there are many ways for students to connect with school and each other:
Dance Club ~ Mon.-Thurs. 2:30-3:30
Diversity Club ~ Tuesdays 3:00
Coming Soon:
Chess Club contact Mr. Easton
Debate Club contact Ms. Singh
Bible Club contact Mr. Chartier
January is National Mental Wellness Month. At the bottom of this newsletter is the January Self-Care Calendar with tips and suggestions to reduce stress. As always, our School Counselors, Dr. Sweney-Black and Mr. Arenzana, as well as our Wellness Social Worker, Ms. Allie are available to support students. If you seek outside counseling referrals for your child, please contact Ms. Ridgeway.
Tutoring Continues: The updated Tutoring schedule is linked here. Remember, teacher office hours are 2-3pm Mon/Tues/Thurs/Fri. Students can contact their teachers for questions, clarification, and additional support during this time.
Wednesdays: after class, students should be working on completing their iReady Diagnostic Tests for Reading and Math. All students should have completed both tests by the end of January.
Have a 6th Grader? Keep in mind that all 7th graders must have a TDap vaccine to enroll. It's not too early to get your 6th grader immunized and email the vaccination card to our school secretary, Mrs. Schroyer, at rschroyer@nlmusd.org.
Cameras On: Students should have their cameras on during class time. This helps us check for understanding and monitor progress. Our "cameras on" policy will ultimately lead to higher engagement. We greatly appreciate your support. (Contact us if circumstances prevent your child from complying, we will work with you!)
Profile Pictures: Please ask your child to show you their Schoology Profile picture. It should be a current picture that looks like them; this helps us get to "know" your child in this Distance Learning environment.
Open Enrollment for NLMUSD schools has begun and will continue through the end of January. If you have friends or neighbors who have children starting middle school, be sure to let them know that in addition to a strong academic program with honors courses, Benton is the destination for the Arts!
We know that with the closure of Los Coyotes, many parents are considering which school is the best fit to meet their child's needs. For anyone who would like to learn more about Benton, we are offering Virtual Tours and are eager to share about our wonderful programs and staff! Check out our Choose Benton video here.

What's up this week?
MLK Holiday ~ No School Monday 1/18/21
Tuesday 1/19/21 is an A Day!
Wednesday is Period3A 9am-10am.
Log into your period 3A Zoom 9-10, then work on the iReady Diagnostics for Math & Reading.
These diagnostic tests are critical for measuring growth, assessing student needs, and developing instruction. Please make sure your child completes these diagnostic tests by the end of January, and that they do their best work.
