Counselor's Corner
I presented a 3rd anti-bully lesson for 3rd and 4th grade students during your child's SELF rotation this week. In the 3rd grade classrooms, we reviewed the three Rs for our bully prevention program which include:
- Recognize bullying and understand the definition for bullying
- Report to a caring adult
- Refuse to engage in bullying behavior and take steps to stop bullying
The focus of the 3rd grade lesson was on refusing bullying and being assertive when standing up for yourself or others. In 4th grade, the focus was on the responsibility of the bystander of bullying to do the right thing. We discussed that part of how a bystander can refuse bullying is through reporting to an adult, being assertive and standing up for themselves or another student, and through supporting the person being bullied. I enjoyed visiting your child's classroom and look forward to visiting again soon!

Note from the Nurse
Accidents happen during the day such as bloody noses, toileting issues, muddy puddles at recess, food/milk spilling at lunch, etc.... The clinic has a limited supply of clothes, so please pack an extra change of clothes (socks and underwear too!) in your child's backpack for the unexpected mishaps. If I do not have anything that fits your child, you will be receiving a call for a change of clothes to be brought to school, since your child cannot return to class or ride the bus home with soiled or wet clothes. Also, I do not have any extra shoes in the clinic, so if your child wears flip flops that are falling apart, please consider having your child wear shoes in better shape so I don't need to duct tape the broken shoe to your student's foot. Thank you for your support!

Feed the Teachers
Parent-Teacher Conferences keep the HPE teachers and staff at the school late into the evening and the PTO Staff Appreciation Committee is hosting a pitch-in to provide them dinner. On Wednesday, October 10th and Thursday, October 11th, we are asking for donations of 2 liters, cookies, pasta, and more. Please visit http://signup.com/go/SFLGKOB and sign-up to feed the teachers!
Help Wanted
We are looking for volunteers for Dine-to-Donate and our fall fundraiser, but our most immediate need is for help with the HPE Community Breakfast (formerly Pancake Breakfast) in December.
We're also looking for people who are interested in serving on the PTO Exec Board for the 2019-2020 school year. Please contact HPEptoVolunteer@gmail.com for more information on these and other opportunities.
Easy Ways to Help the PTO
Cut your Box Tops for Education and send them to school with your student at any time. Visit www.boxtops4education.com for a list of products.
If you shop on Amazon or at Kroger, check out these completely free and zero effort ways to raise money for the HPE PTO. The prices are the same, the service is the same, you shop the same way, but a portion of the purchase price will be donated to the PTO, that’s it!
On Amazon, just go to smile.amazon.com/ch/20-0114174 to link your account to the PTO and then check out using smile.amazon.com everytime--you cannot access this through an app so fill up your cart and then open a browser to check out or shop directly on smile.amazon.com.
For Kroger, login to your online account or create one using the Kroger Plus Card number you already have or get a new one. Then go to www.kroger.com/communityrewards and enroll in Community Rewards. Search for “VA241” and select “HARRISON PARKWAY ELEMENTARY - PTO.” Then scan your Kroger Plus Card or enter your alternate ID every time you check out just like you always have.
Check the HPE PTO website for all current volunteer opportunities! bit.ly/hpepto
Report a Student Absence
If your child will be absent from school, please contact us at (317) 915-4210. You may call and leave a message on our attendance line anytime before 8:00 a.m. After 8:00 a.m., our office staff will be available to speak with you and document your child's absence. It is important to let us know your child will be absent or late arrival prior to 9:00 a.m.
If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence. If you notify your child's teacher of an absence via email, please make sure you also contact the office by phone or email (apowell@hse.k12.in.us) to ensure that attendance is marked appropriately.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at https://www.hseschools.org/services/other/school-safety/visiting-and-volunteering
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. Applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.
Safe Visitor Badges
Per HSE Policy, visitors must have their Safe Visitor Badge scanned to check-in to the building. Please download the Safe Visitor App (IPhone) or have your badge ready and available to be scanned when you come into the school office. The app is in Google Play for other types of phones. To find the Safe Visitor app, search for “SafeVisitor” (there is no space in between the words).
Upon leaving, please give your printed badge to the office staff for quick check-out.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Vicki Foutty at 317-594-4100.
