Preparing to say "Au Revoir" to a most unusual year
In the past, this is the time of the year when I began preparing for June 11 by counting backward (a necessary SOL skill) to the end of the year. I would place a flamingo or other dollar store decoration on my door with a stack of numbers attached. My students and I celebrated each day as we removed a number as we grew closer to summer vacation. This year, the countdown looks a lot different. Just because we cannot celebrate the end of another year with ice pops and extra recess, does not mean we cannot celebrate! The podcast below has many great ideas on how to commemorate the end of this very unusual year. I have listed a couple of my favorite ideas, but you might find something that works better for you on the podcast.
Another intriguing idea is to try a last day of school party with your students virtually. Make it fun and invite them to bring a snack to your Zoom meeting. It's a party that you do not have to clean up after:) During the party invite students to share memories of their favorite time in your classroom - anything that you would normally do at your end of the year party.
The podcast below is filled with lots of other great ideas that will help you end this most unusual school year on a positive note.
