Our Focus on Kindness Continues
STAR Expectations
This past Wednesday all Steeple Run students and staff attended assemblies where they were introduced to our building-wide STAR Expectations.
STAR Expectations are procedures and rules that will be taught to students to encourage positive behaviors and prevent problem behaviors. They form important building blocks for positive school culture and were developed collaboratively with our SEL School Improvement Team, choosing language that is easily understandable for all primary and intermediate students.
These expectations will address how students treat each other and the teacher, and how they operate in the school setting. They will also address how students behave outside of the classroom, such as in the lunchroom, playground, hallways, and restrooms.
In schools with clear and consistent behavior expectations:
- Students know and understand what’s expected of them, which gives them confidence.
- Students monitor themselves and take more responsibility for their behavior — and their learning.
- Students spend more time on task and academic learning time increases.
- Teachers can more easily recognize and motivate positive behaviors.
- Classroom stress for students and teachers decreases.
- Students gain a sense of safety and security.
- The classroom culture and school culture become more positive overall.
With our consistent STAR Expectations, students will know what’s expected of them throughout the school day. This allows them to feel more confident, engaged and connected to the school community. It also makes it easier for teachers to recognize positive behaviors, and to correct problem behaviors to keep small problems small. Our goal is to keep our STAR Expectations consistent from year to year, resulting in increased positive decision making and school culture.

We Reached Our Goal!!!
Thank you to those of you who have taken the time to complete our 5Essentials Survey! We have reached the 20% participation threshold that ensures our school's data will be considered sufficient. The survey window will remain open through Feb. 14th if you have not yet had the opportunity to participate!
The 5Essentials were developed by the University of Chicago Urban Education Institute, in partnership with Chicago Public Schools. Past research has shown that schools strong on at least three of the five essentials are 10 times more likely to improve student learning than schools weak on three or more of the five essentials.
At Steeple Run partnership with our families is an important part of any successful school initiative. Each year we use the data found in the 5 Essential Survey data seen below to focus our school improvement planning on issues that matter most to our Super Star families.
Please click the link below to take this year's survey and thank you for your participation!
