An Update From Principal Melissa Rohr

Hello West Hills Families! Happy May! State Testing is upon us this month. If you students are in grades three through eight they will be taking the state assessments. Third through eighth grades are all evaluated for growth in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Math. Fifth and eighth grade are also evaluated for Science. Here is how you can help your student with testing.

  • Make sure your student is getting plenty of rest prior to testing.
  • Have a good breakfast or encourage them to eat a school breakfast.
  • Encourage them to try their best, but not to be anxious about the test. It is simply a snapshot in time.
  • Ask them how their test went at the end of the day.

These simple tasks will help your student to feel calm and ready to show us what they know.

Spring Testing

Dear families,

Each spring students in grades 3rd-8th and grade 10 are given the opportunity to show what they know on the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in ELA (reading/writing) and math, and students in grades 5, 8, and 11 are given the opportunity to show what they know on the WCAS (Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science). The state has worked with the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium to reduce the lengths of the SBA tests, so our students will now spend less time testing and more time learning!

Why are assessments important?

Assessments are one way, along with other measures, to know how students are doing in these subjects. They also provide important information to understand how districts and the state are doing in meeting all students’ learning needs. We encourage families to use the results to engage with their child’s teacher(s) about how to support learning at home.

Which test will my child take and when?

How can I help my child be ready?

Most scores will be reported to schools in June, with official score reports ready for families when we return to school in the fall!

In partnership,

Principal Rohr

FREE therapy available to all Bremerton School District students and staff

The mental health of our students is a top priority. That’s why we’re offering a free new service: Gaggle Teletherapy.

If your student is feeling sad, hopeless, angry, or anxious—or having challenges with family, friends, or relationships—therapy could help.

Gaggle Therapy is a free, confidential option to connect weekly with a therapist online and on your student’s schedule. Students can be referred by a teacher, counselor or parent, and students age 13 and older can self-refer.

Getting started is easy and only takes a few minutes. Learn more or sign-up your student here.
