From The Principal's Desk
Greetings North Wales Families,
We are entering our first full week of school as we head into week 3! This week we have Back To School Night. Students will begin taking their diagnostic assessments in reading and math. We end the week with popsicles on the playground! As we continue our tradition of highlighting culture and heritage, we kick off this month with Hispanic Heritage Month.
Our North Wales community love to capture moments and create memories to share with our families throughout the year. If you DO NOT want your child(ren) photographed, please complete the Publicity Refusal Form.
During the warmer months, our students that are walkers like to stay after school to play with friends on the playground. Our students are more than welcome to enjoy the weather and socialize with friends. We want to remind our families that adult supervision ends at 3:55pm. To ensure student safety after hours on the playground, we would really encourage students to be accompanied by an adult.
This year, we stand 21 years removed from the fateful day of Sept. 11, 2001. Do you remember when you awoke on Sept. 11? Do you remember going about your normal business? Do you remember how, over the course of a single morning, the nation changed? We found meaning and inspiration in service to others. We refocused on what we felt was most important, often investing more in relationships with family and friends. Do you remember how life felt different? For much of the last two decades, those memories were alive because we kept them so. Those memories motivated our actions and, because so many of us shared those memories and a commitment to them, they shaped our lives. When we see and celebrate the greatness in those around us, we remember. When we show compassion to those among us struggling, personally or professionally, we remember. When we lift the downtrodden, the depressed, and mistreated, we remember. Let us keep the memories of the fallen alive, focused not on the tragedy of the attack, but on the beauty of our response and the opportunity we still have to use our memories to propel us to a better future.
Thank you for your partnership in ensuring our student’s continual growth and development.
I am looking forward to another great week!
Warmly,
Ms. Dana Kenney
Principal

Cultural Highlight Of The Week
A Little History
Hispanic Heritage Month began as a commemorative week when it was introduced in June of 1968 by California Congressman George E. Brown. Representative Brown represented East Los Angeles and a large portion of the San Gabriel Valley which were both heavily populated by members of the Hispanic and Latinx communities. He wanted to recognize the influence members of these communities played throughout American history. In September 1968, Congress chose the week including September 15 and 16 National Hispanic Heritage Week to celebrate the contributions and achievements of the diverse cultures within the Hispanic community.
The dates were chosen to commemorate two key historic events:
Independence Day, honoring the formal signing of the Act of Independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua (September 15, 1821)
Mexico’s Independence Day, which denotes the beginning of the struggle against Spanish control (September 16, 1810).
