Current Events
Spending bill eases school lunch nutrition rules
Michelle Obama and the White House enforced lower sodium and whole-grain requirements for all schools that have recently been eased. The spending deal put before Congress this week gives schools the ability to ease up on the whole grain standards in school meals, but the current caps on the amount of salt in the meals stays the same. Many of the students in some schools were not taking well to the whole-grain adjustment and the schools saw it as a major waste of food. The 2010 law stated that all grains that were served in the 2014-15 school year must be rich with whole grain. The spending bill recently proposed allows schools to be excused from that. They will still be required to make sure at least half are still whole grain. Everyone agrees that the nutrition rules First Lady has been working so hard to enforce are a step in the right direction, but need to be taken in more of "baby steps"
Barbara Bush Wants to Help Improve Nutrition Worldwide
Former first daughter Barbara Bush is working on focusing in on the lack of nutrition too many children in the U.S. suffer from. She is involved greatly in a global health organization causing her to realize many things. The first couple years of a child's life is proven to be able to effect the child's life for the rest of his or hers life. Because of this, Bush is working towards getting the word out to children so that they may go back and tell their parents. She is focusing on the fact that the malnutritioned children in the U.S. look differently than the children overseas. The Global Health Corps is going to address the lack of nutrition within the low-income communities here in the U.S. The lack of access to healthy, nutrient filled foods is causing children to become obese, which is very likely to cause problems later in life. Therefore, the organization is not only working towards improving the nutrition overseas, but here in America as well.
Farmers' market program teaches students nutrition
Third graders from Cesar Chavez Elementary School in Coachella visited the Public Market in Palm Desert. The children spent the day engaged in a program targeted to young children with the hopes of teaching them the importance and fun in eating healthy foods. The nutrition program the market provides is one of many within the area. The children are also allowed to invite their parents. Third grade is usually the year that students begin to learn about nutrition therefore the trip the students take is key. The video that came along with the article showed how engaged and excited the kids really were about being there and learning.
10 Things Your Doctor Won’t Tell You About Nutrition
The article address many important points that your doctor may not stress enough. The first one is that "nutrition is important". Now obviously your doctor is going to tell you that it's important to exercise and eat healthy but they usually do not go as in depth as they should. The second point is that many doctors, more than it should be, did not receive professional in depth training about nutrition. The third thing that you may not have been told is the calories are not the only things that matter. The quality is just as important as the quantity. The article continues to address points such as the fact that there is no "best diet, you're probably not drinking enough water and the waste of spending money on a multivitamin.
