Information/Updates about Westerville Central High School
Message from Mr. Lanier
This edition of the newsletter contains important dates this spring including dates that our seniors should take note of in their calendars.
It is amazing how quickly this school year is flying by. We are going to blink and find ourselves at the Celeste Center celebrating the accomplishments of the class of 2018. Spring is such an exciting time of year and is full of events that allow us to honor the achievements of Warhawk Nation, especially our seniors. The last quarter of the year is vital for everyone in the building.
Seniors, make sure you don't procrastinate in completing the requirements necessary to graduate and participate in the ceremony. Take time to enjoy your final days at Central. Make sure that you leave a positive legacy as an example to our underclassmen to follow.
Underclassmen, finish the school year strong. Make it a goal to have your highest gpa, best attendance, and contribute something positive to the building this quarter. Work together to honor the seniors and wish them well as they get set to soar to great heights when they graduate in May.
It's going to be a lot of fun!!

Did You Know that Bacteria Glows?
AP Biology and Medical Intervention students were able to genetically transform E.coli bacteria this week. Students combined E.coli with the genes from a jellyfish which allowed them to produce bacteria that "glow".
AP Biology students used the technique to study antibiotic resistance, transgene expression, and conduct a science case study.
Medical Intervention students continued with the lab to further isolate the glowing protein and will test the purity of their products when they return from break. This lab acted as a model for MI students as they study the production and purification of insulin for diabetic patients.

Congratulations to Kaii Brown and Jada Harvey
Congratulations to Warhawk writer Kaii Brown, whose essay earned Honorable Mention at the state level of the Letters About Literature competition.
Kaii’s letter to author novelist Matthew Quick competed against more than 900 letters submitted state-wide in the high school division for this year's contest. Kaii's letter is one of seven in the state of Ohio recognized for the highest honors in the competition.
Junior Jada Harvey’s letter to poet Katherine Smith took her to the semi-final round of the state competition.
Letters About Literature is a reading and writing contest in which students are asked to write to the author (living or dead) about how a book the student has read affected them personally. Letters are judged on state and national levels. Tens of thousands of students from across the country enter Letters About Literature each year. State winners are awarded several hundred dollars in prize money; national winners are eligible for a $1,000 prize.
Bree Phillips and the Brio Piano Quartet Compete Nationally
Congratulations to Westerville Central High School student Bree Phillips, who is a member of the Brio Piano Quartet at the Chamber Music Connection. The piano quartet advanced to the National Semi-Finals of the 2018 Coltman National Chamber Music Competition, held at the Butler School of Music in Austin, TX.
Only a few select chamber ensembles from around the country are invited nationally to compete in the Coltman Competition. Bree's team advanced after an initial round of audition recordings were submitted and evaluated by top musicians and artists in the field of music. Internationally acclaimed musicians and educators from the University of Texas, Austin, and Texas State University judged the performances of the elite junior ensembles. The finals will air on Austin Public Radio KMFA 89.5 at a later date
this spring.
