Greetings from the Principal
Dear Riverview Families,
Our theme this school year is to "Go Boldly" and we are working hard to make sure that all of our students have new opportunities to go where they have not gone before, and take giant leaps of learning and leadership! We are focusing on ensuring that all students understand our three RE's: REspect, REsponsibility, and being REady to learn.
What does it mean to go boldly? We at Riverview want to focus on a growth mindset this year with ourselves and with our students because let's face it -- no one is great at everything, and we're all dedicated to continuous improvement. In a nutshell, having a growth mindset means that given enough time and effort--going boldly--a person can get better at just about anything. Research shows that the greatest determinant of success is not IQ, it's effort. Given that, it's important for kids to understand that just because they can't do something well, it doesn't mean that they'll never be able to do it well, it just means that they can't do it yet.
As educators, we have all heard students at one time or another say, "I'm not good at math." "Technology and I are not friends." "I'm not athletic." These phrases sound like a Fixed mindset -- traits that are unchangeable. If we are Going Boldly, we will be asking students to stretch and grow their brains in terms of effort by setting goals, putting in the practice needed, and watching their skills improve! Classroom teachers will be working to increase the opportunities students have to use technology in new, transformative ways to learn and to demonstrate their learning. Students may be asked to take on new leadership roles throughout their classrooms and the building. Many students will set and track their own goals, and problem-solve on what needs to be done in order to meet their individual goals. In order to Go Boldly, we want students to feel comfortable taking risks, and that sounds more like, "I'm not good at math yet." "Technology isn't my friend yet." "I can't run fast without practice."
If you want to watch a video or two about Growth Mindset, I recommend looking for anything by Carol Dweck, the author of Mindset:The New Psychology of Success. Throughout the year, I'll be sending out resources and examples from our classrooms. I can't wait to see how much we grow this year!
Go boldly this week!
Beth Mildren
