Hello from Hoover!
November 19, 2021
Hello Hoover Families!
Welcome to the 2nd trimester! We welcomed several Hoover Hawks back onsite from the Online School, and we welcomed a few from other schools, districts, and states. The students have done an amazing job helping our new friends feel at home here at Hoover.
This afternoon, we enjoyed the "Principal's Surprise" for meeting the $6000 Read-a-Thon goal. Mr. Simpson and I had our silly string duel and it was epic! See the pictures below and be sure to ask your child about it.
In other exiting news, our students have earned nearly 40,000 PBIS tickets! This means that we will have an all-school celebration on Tuesday next week. Your child's classroom teacher will provide more details for the READ AND FEED. Thanks to the Classroom Connect parents who are donating snacks for this event.
Thank you to all who attended parent teacher conferences during these last two weeks. We appreciate your time, and we enjoy having the chance to visit with you about all of the great things your kids have done during the first trimester. Also, I want to give a HUGE thanks to all families who donated to the "Feed the Teachers" fund. The PTA was able to spoil us with tacos from Mexico Lindo for the Thursday night conferences, soup, sandwiches and cookies for Wednesday lunch, and pizza and salad for Wednesday dinner. Having food available during the late conference nights is very much appreciated!
Remember that we will only have school on Monday and Tuesday next week. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are no school days for the Thanksgiving holiday. I hope all of you have time during the long weekend to do something that brings you joy.
Thank you for all you do to support your children and our school!
Love and light to all,
Mrs. Ceynar

Safety Reminders for Drop off and Pick Up
Safety is our top priority so it's time to review our Drop off and Pick up procedures.
When dropping off or picking up from the carline, please follow these guidelines:
- Following the path into the parking lot, please pull up as far as you can, without passing any other cars and without blocking the crosswalk
- Stay in your vehicle and have your child exit/enter your car from the passenger side
- If carline spaces are not immediately available, please wait in line or park in an available lot space. Please do not double park in the aisles of the parking lot or the carline.
- If you need to leave your car for any reason, please park in an available lot space and use the sidewalks and crosswalk. Please do not leave cars unattended in the carline. Spots along the back sidewalk are specifically reserved for those that need to help their children get in and out of their car.

It is important to include the following information when you call or email:
1. child's name
2. grade and teacher
3. the reason for their absence. For example, we would like to know if they are absent because of illness, a vacation. If your child is absent and you have not contacted us, someone from the office will call you to check in.
Therapy Dog at Hoover
Dear Parents:
We are writing to inform you that a therapy animal has been approved under ICCSD policies to be present in your child’s school. Redd is a Fox Red Labrador Retriever that has been individually trained to provide animal therapy. Under federal and state law, ICCSD is sometimes required to allow therapy animals onto ICCSD property, but we want to minimize any negative effects on other students and staff in the building due to Redd’s presence. You may review ICCSD’s policy regarding Therapy Animals in the School District at https://www.iowacityschools.org/cms/lib/IA01903939/Centricity/Domain/80/100%20Series%20-%20School%20District%209.19.pdf.
ICCSD staff will meet with the owner and handler of Redd to determine the best way to introduce them to the building and classroom. Having information about any allergies or fears that affect others in the classroom is extremely important to the introduction effort and to determine whether accommodations need to be made for others in the classroom. If your child suffers any known allergies to, or has fear of, dogs, please contact your child's teacher or the Hoover office (319) 688-1110 so that our staff can include that information in its introduction plan. If you have any questions, please contact Kris Mowatt, Behavior Interventionist, or Carolyn Ceynar, Principal.

HEALTH AND SAFETY IN SCHOOL
COVID-19 Vaccines: Second Dose for children age 5-11
The COVID-19 vaccine clinic will be at Hoover on Thursday, December 2, from 2:15-6:00pm. This clinic will be for children who need their second dose. A parent/guardian must be present for a child to receive the vaccine.
Below are additional local resources for scheduling an appointment if you or your eligible family members would like to receive the COVID-19 vaccine:
- UI Health Care will hold evening and weekend COVID-19 vaccine clinics at their Iowa River Landing location for children ages 5 to 11 beginning this week. Appointments can be scheduled at https://uihc.org/schedule-your-covid-19-vaccination.
- Mercy Iowa City Family Practice: Call (319) 339-3520
- Towncrest Pharmacy: Visit https://www.towncrest.com, or call (319) 337-3526
- Appointments may also be available through local CVS, Hy-Vee, Wal-Mart, or Walgreens locations.
- Your primary care provider may also have vaccination appointments available.
COVID-19 vaccines are available at no cost; however, vaccine providers may charge an administration fee, which is covered by most insurance. For uninsured patients, this fee is covered by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Provider Relief Fund.
For individuals seeking information about the COVID-19 vaccine, you may visit the JCPH, Mercy, or UI Health Care vaccine information websites. Specific information regarding the COVID-19 vaccine and children can also be found here: COVID-19 vaccines for your child | University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.
Mask Requirement to Continue
Dear Families and Staff,
On October 8, 2021, a preliminary injunction was granted regarding the State of Iowa’s mask requirement ban. This preliminary injunction follows the temporary restraining order that was issued on September 13, 2021, and provides school districts in Iowa the ability to require face masks in schools. Based on this decision, the Iowa City Community School District will continue to require face masks for all students, staff, and visitors in our buildings and on our campuses.
This decision is based largely on the CDC’s strong recommendation that face masks be worn in schools, regardless of a person's vaccination status. This requirement also aligns with the advice of our local public health experts. We appreciate your support and collaboration in keeping our school community safe.
Sincerely,
Matt Degner
Superintendent
