Welcome Back and Happy New Year!!!
We hope that you had a wonderful and rejuvenating Winter Break! We are looking forward to an exciting and prosperous 2016 and hope that you are as well.
CHARACTER COUNTS! Everywhere, All The Time....
Each fall our character education program is reintroduced to each elementary school student. Since 2003, CHARACTER COUNTS! has been used by the Haddon Township School District as a means of enhancing our students’ abilities to make appropriate choices, both in and out of school. Based on the CHARACTER COUNTS Coalition model, we offer our students, teachers, parents, and administrators a common language that can be used when discussing good character. This common language is centered on the coalition’s framework, which we believe is the essence of good character, and is based on the “Six Pillars of Character”
- TRUSTWORTHINESS — integrity, honesty, promise-keeping, loyalty
- RESPECT — courtesy, autonomy, dignity, diversity, Golden Rule
- RESPONSIBILITY — duty, accountability, pursuit of excellence
- FAIRNESS — openness, consistency, impartiality
- CARING — kindness, compassion, empathy
- CITIZENSHIP — lawfulness, common good, environment
Though we will have a monthly focus, CHARACTER COUNTS! is not an “add-on” program for our schools that diverts attention from our academic curriculum. It is not another “thing” on the proverbial plates of the students’ and teachers’ already full days. Rather, character education is the plate itself, on which all other school activities can be started. CHARACTER COUNTS! presents itself in “teachable moments” throughout each school day and is constantly defined, modeled, and promoted throughout the year. So, as the school year gets underway, please have those conversations with your children regarding the Six Pillars of Character and how they pertain to their lives in and out of school.
For the month of January, we will focus on Fairness.
- Monday, January 4, 2016 - School Reopens - WELCOME BACK!
- Monday, January 18, 2016 - No School
- Wednesday, January 20, 2016 - District-Wide Elementary Instrumental Concert
Just a reminder.... Please respect local police department ordinances with regard to stopping and parking around our school. Parents/guardians may not stop and wait, or park on Patton Avenue or Briarwood Avenue along the yellow curbs. The same holds true for neighboring streets along yellow curbs and in any areas where “no parking” is posted. Parents stopping and parking in these areas are creating a dangerous situation for students and may be ticketed by officers of the Haddon Township Police Department who are monitoring this situation on a regular basis during any of the pick-up and drop-off times occurring throughout the day.
Additionally, please be respectful and considerate of our residential neighbors and take care not to block their driveways or pedestrian crosswalks even if only for a few minutes. People not adhering to the local traffic laws create a real danger for the students assigned to safety posts and for other children traveling to and from school. Please keep in mind that we are all responsible for the safety of our students.
