CSD Weekly Update
WEEK #13, November 13, 2020, Cambrian School District
Dear Cambrian Families,
Can you believe it? Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away. Almost everything about this year has looked different, and for most of us, holidays will be adjusted as well. But no matter if you are celebrating with four family members (this year) or 40 family members (any other year!), you can still have an attitude of gratitude.
What do you have to be thankful for? There are so many things. As the Superintendent of Cambrian Schools, I am very grateful for the incredible staff with whom I get to serve. I am thankful for the incredible teamwork displayed all year, especially during these extraordinary circumstances. I am honored to be a part of this special school district--the parents and students make Cambrian School District a wonderful place.
I’m wondering what our students might say to their teachers to express gratitude -- if your student creates a THANK YOU card or drawing for their teacher, could you please share it with me? I’d like to share it with our staff, as we collectively show an attitude of gratitude. Please email any photos of your students with staff THANK YOUs to Dawn Klavon at klavond@cambriansd.org. By sending the photo, you are giving permission to CSD to use the photo on our websites and social media. We want to show off our amazing kids and teachers!
The District Read-a-thon is well on its way and today was a special day for our students. Today, a shout-out to all students who dressed up today for the CEF’s “Dress As Your Favorite Book Character” event! So creative!
You Can Help Protect Student Programs
On behalf of Cambrian students, thank you to the hundreds of people who signed a letter of support last week to help protect student programs and to those who will sign now.
Due to chronic state underfunding, declining enrollment, and the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cambrian School District is facing a budget deficit. Since early 2019, the District has been assessing potential district-owned land development opportunities to create additional on-going, annual revenue to sustain our award-winning programs.
You can help PROTECT STUDENT PROGRAMS by supporting the "Support Our Students" land development initiative. Thirty seconds of your time can help generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in ongoing, annual revenue without increasing taxes in the community. Click here to sign a letter of support and to learn more.

Installation of Automatic Hand Sanitizer Machines
The District is continuing to implement the requirements from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department (SCCPHD). Currently, we are in the process of replacing filters with a higher MERV13 rating. We are set to have all the filters completed by November 20, 2020. In addition, we have also been installing wallmounted touchless hand sanitizer dispensers in all classrooms.
We have received many inquiries from staff and families regarding the chemicals being used on sites for cleaning and disinfection. As a means to full transparency, we finalized a document listing the items currently being used which include a link to each product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS). This document has been posted on the District website under the Buildings & Grounds Department heading or you can view it here. At next Thursday’s Board Meeting, we will have a full presentation on ventilation and air quality that will outline what has been accomplished to date and next steps.
Helpful Tips from our Cambrian School District Nurse
Special Shout Out to all Students Who Dressed Up Today for the CEF’s “Dress As Your Favorite Book Character” event!
CEF READ-A-THON
This year the CEF is hosting its inaugural District wide Read-a-thon, raising funds for much needed mental health resources. We are looking for all students in the District to join this "Fun Raising" event, with the clear objectives to:
Celebrate childhood literacy
Inspire school spirit and healthy inter school competition
Raise funds to support the Cambrian School Districts mental health initiative
The proceeds from the Read-A-Thon will go towards providing much needed mental health resources to the Cambrian School District.
HOW IT WORKS: Students read books and log the number of minutes read daily. Students ask family and friends to donate either an amount per minute or a flat amount. It's just that easy!
A FEW NOTES:
All reading minutes and pledges will be managed through a single website. Details will come in the information pack.
The school that reads the most** will win the first ever Cambrian District Read-a-thon trophy.
The class that reads to most will win "Reading Class of the Year".
The student who reads the most over the district will be the "Cambrian Reader of the Year".
The student who reads the most at each age level will win their age bracket prize.
Students "read minutes" will be converted to a ratio of the number of minutes expected at their age group. Schools will be calculated as a ratio of the number of students enrolled.
November 5th - Information packs will be emailed to families
November 13th - Read-a-thon Kick off and District wide Spirit wear day! Dress as your favorite book character!
November 13th - January 15th - READ READ READ and watch out for mini events along the way!
January 15th - Last day of reading
January 21st - District-wide winners announced
January 22nd - School specific winners announced
