Alumni Spotlight! Look Where They Are Now!
Luis Juárez, Class of 2010 5th Grade Bilingual Teacher at William Lipscomb Elementary School
Hello Longhorn family, my name is Luis Juárez and I am part of the alumni class of 2010 – after graduating from W. T. White, I earned a degree in bilingual education from The University of Texas at Austin in 2014 and returned to teach in Dallas ISD. Currently, I am a 5th grade bilingual teacher at William Lipscomb Elementary School. Some of my most memorable experiences at White were being part of the Key Club – volunteering has always been something very important to me, it has shaped my character and now I truly enjoy it. There is always time to give, you just need to make it. Another memorable experience was the Close-Up trip in 2010 – I believe that was the very first time it happened. Mr. Wallace, Ms. Driscoll and Mrs. Bates are amazing leaders that bravely took a group of juniors and senior to Washington, D.C.! This was an experience that I will never forget. Most importantly, I will be forever thankful to the ESL department – as an immigrant student, teachers like Mrs. Guerra played a fundamental role in my academic and personal development. I immigrated to the United States in 2004 and went through the ESL programs at Marsh and White - I owe all my accomplishments to those teachers that molded me and helped me through the years. Thanks to all these teachers – I became one myself. Now, I am on my fourth year in the classroom and there has not been one day when I feel like I am “coming to work” – I truly enjoy what I do. One of my most memorable accomplishments is being 1 of 9 teachers from across the country to be honored at the White House in 2015 as a DACAmented Champion of Change. There will always be people that doubt your abilities, it’s inevitable – but it is up to you to prove them wrong.
As a teacher, I have thought of creative way to reach my students’ parents – so I turned to YouTube! Here’s my favorite video yet - https://youtu.be/w9TNijYk-Xs
