A Writer is Born
Sam came into this world on November 30,1835 in Florida, Missouri. His parents gave him the name Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Sam was born on the Mississippi River. He lived in Hannibal,Mo as a child and spent most of the time on the river. Samuel's father died when Sam was just 12 years old. So Sam quit school and became the man of the house. His father died of pneumonia from standing outside in the rain while campaigning for being the county judge. Sam walked in his sleep when he was upset. One time he started his mother and sister, and they thought he was a ghost.
Jobs of a Writer
The river was so important to Sam, so he became a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River from 1857-1859. In between 1857-1859 he got the pen name of Mark Twain. Mark Twain meant "two fathoms deep." Then he was a silver prospector in Nevada, then Sam was a newspaper journalist. His last job was a writer. When he was on the job he lived in different places, like Nevada, California, and even Hawaii. Samuel Clemens got married in 1870. Sam married Olivia Langdon. Olivia and Sam had their first child the same year they got married. Their son was named Langdon. Langdon died 19 months after he was born. Samuel Langhorne Clemens died April 21st, 1910.

Mark Twain was famous because he wrote over 30 books and 100 short stories and essays. Tom Sawyer was and still is one of his best sellers. Tom Sawyer was about Mark's boyhood. Huckleberry Finn is a the sequel of Tom Sawyer. Lots of people think that Huckleberry Finn is the best book by Mark Twain. These two books were published in 1876.

was a big part of his life. Sam wrought books such as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He also wrote articles and essays on many different subjects throughout his life. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn were about his life as a boy. Sam was also talented at working hard. He was a "Jack of all Trades". Samuel Clemens was a printer's apprentice, steamboat pilot, silver prospector, and a journalist fiction writer. Sam was also a leader by being one of the first people to have humor in his writing, and by becoming the man of the house after his father died. Samuel Langhorne Clemens is no longer with us but his writing still lives on.
