ATHLETICS:
BOYS BASKETBALL:
- February 11th vs. Klein Forest
On Tuesday, February 11th, The Highlanders (7-6 in district) faced the 3rd place Klein Forest Golden Eagles (10-4 in district). The Highlanders were coming off a tough loss to Klein Collins. The game started quickly for The Highlanders, who jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but then turned just as quickly as The Highlanders found themselves on the wrong end of a 17-3 run by the Golden Eagles, and ended up trailing 17-10 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Highlanders opened the 2nd quarter on a 10-0 run, leading to a 20-17 advantage, but by the end of the 2nd, the Golden Eagles had regained the lead, going into halftime up 26-24. After falling behind 36-30 late in the 3rd quarter, The Highlanders scored the final 6 points and were tied at 36-36 heading into the final quarter. An 0 for 7 start for The Highlanders in the 4th quarter left them staring at a 42-36 deficit, which would stretch to 9 points with 4:27 to go in the game. After that, The Highlanders started to crawl back into the game, and with 1:32 remaining, a three-pointer by Ben Mills pulled the Highlanders within 1 at 48-47. A free throw by the Golden Eagles put their lead back at 2 points, but another bucket by Ben Mills tied the game at 49-49 with 1:10 remaining to play. On the next possession, a bucket by the Golden Eagles again stretched the lead to 2 points, but with 19 seconds to go Brock Luechtefeld found Cole Himmer behind the defense for a game-tying basket. Cole was also fouled on the play and made the free throw to give The Highlanders a one-point lead. The Golden Eagles were unable to convert on their next possession and were forced to foul. A free throw by Cole Himmer provided the final score of 53-51 and a much-needed win for The Highlanders, who remained tied for the fourth and final district playoff spot with Conroe. Scoring for The Highlanders were Hagen Byerly-17, Brock Luechtefeld-13, Ben Mills-8, Cole Himmer-5, Tyler Hveem-5, David Omokwale-3, and Peyton Mattingly-2. In other games, the JV won 55-36, the Sophomores won 57-41, the Freshman Green won 49-36, and the Freshman Red won 51-36.
- February 14th vs. Oak Ridge
On Friday, February 14th, The Highlanders (8-6 in district) faced the second-to-last place Oak Ridge War Eagles (2-12 in district) on Senior Night in their final home game of the season. Coming off of a big victory over Klein Forest, The Highlanders needed another win to keep pace with Conroe for the 4th and final playoff spot. By the end of the 1st quarter, The Highlanders were clinging to a small 16-14 lead, but by the end of the 2nd that advantage was stretched to 35-24. But if they were hoping to cruise to an easy victory over the War Eagles, they were mistaken, and with 4 quick points at the end of the 3rd quarter, the War Eagles closed the gap to 47-42 entering the final stanza. The Highlanders started out the 4th quarter with buckets by Ben Mills and Brock Luechtefeld stretching the lead back to 9 points at 51-42 with 6:30 to play. However, over the next minute-plus, the War Eagles responded with a 10-0 run leading them to a 52-51 lead at 5:17. The game was back and forth the rest of the way, and The Highlanders found themselves trailing 63-62 with the ball out of bounds and 16.9 seconds on the clock. After a timeout, Coach Reed substituted Andres Pallares and called his name for an out-of-bounds play under the basket. Andres responded with a clutch bucket with 15 seconds to play, leading to a 64-63 advantage. On the War Eagles next possession, they were able to drive down the right side of the lane to attempt a game winning shot, but that attempt was blocked out of bounds by Ben Mills with 6.5 seconds to play. On their inbounds play the War Eagles were again unable to convert, and The Highlanders escaped with a 64-63 victory. The win sets up an exciting final game against 2nd place College Park as a Highlander victory assures them of securing the final district playoff spot. Scoring for The Highlanders were Brock Luechtefeld-18, Hagen Byerly-14, Tyler Hveem-10, David Omokwale-6, Andres Pallares-4, Kylan Williams-4, Peyton Mattingly-3, Ben Mills-3, and Cole Himmer-2. In other games, the JV won 58-46, the Sophomores won 61-27, the Freshman Green won 54-38, and the Freshman Red won 41-16.
- February 18th vs. College Park
On Tuesday, February 18th, The Highlanders (9-6 in district) faced the 2nd place College Park Cavaliers (11-4 in district) for their final regular-season game. This was a “win-and-your-in” game for The Highlanders, who would automatically qualify for the playoffs with a victory. They started out hot and opened with an outstanding 1st quarter, jumping out to an 18-7 lead, which was extended slightly by halftime to 31-19. At the opening of the 3rd quarter, The Highlanders were able to stretch that lead further and commanded a 36-23 lead with 6:13 to play in the quarter. But the wheels came off after that, and the Cavaliers went on a 16-2 run, closing out the quarter with a 39-38 advantage. The game was tight during the 4th quarter with the Cavaliers maintaining a small lead, but The Highlanders battled back, tying the game at 45-45 with 3:50 to play on a free throw by Brock Luechtefeld. The Cavaliers went back on top, extending their lead to 4 points, but a three-pointer by Ben Mills brought The Highlanders back to within 1 point with 1:33 to play. They were never able to get closer the rest of the way and ended up losing 56-51. The loss meant that The Highlanders would need to get some help to make the playoffs, and they got that help when Klein Oak beat Conroe in overtime to give The Highlanders their 15th straight playoff berth. Scoring for The Highlanders were Ben Mills-16, Hagen Byerly-7, Brock Luechtefeld-7, Andres Pallares-7, Peyton Mattingly-5, Kylan Williams-4, David Omokwale-3, and Tyler Hveem-2. In other games, the JV lost 58-47, the Sophomores won 60-48, the Freshman Green won 55-48, and the Freshman Red won 50-34.
- Come out and watch The Highlanders playoff game on Tuesday, February 25th at 8:00 pm against the Westfield Mustangs at Grand Oaks High School, 4800 Riley Fuzzel Road, Spring, TX 77386.
LADY HIGHLANDER BASKETBALL: The Lady Highlander Freshmen Green team finished the year with an overall record of seven wins and six losses. They also won a district championship with a record of 4-1. The last game of the year was the district championship clincher against Oak Ridge. The Lady Highlanders started the game off fast, taking a significant lead by the end of the first quarter. They sealed the win by winning every quarter and finished with a 10 point lead.
- The Freshmen-(Red) team wrapped up their season with a 46-24 home victory over Klein Collins, to clinch the district title!!! The girls worked extremely hard this season to achieve their ultimate goal, which was to be District Champs!! The ladies endured all the bumps, bruises, illnesses, and injuries that came along the way to still finish on top!! . The Red team finished the season with an overall record of 22-3, and district record of 13-1, and stayed undefeated at home!! The future is bright for the Lady Highlanders!!
- The Lady Highlanders JV team concluded the 2019-2020 season with a 61-34 win versus Klein Forest High School. Sowmya Swaminathan led all scorers with 15 points! It was an awesome team win and a great way to cap off a long season. Despite numerous changes in the line-up due to various situations, the Lady Highlanders finished the season with a 14-11 overall record as well as captured 1st place in the Magnolia JV Tournament! As we evaluate our efforts over the season, each individual player played an integral part in all of the team's success, from scoring, to defending, to just being the ultimate motivating teammate! Thanks Ladies for another successful season in the books...now on to Post Season...Time to Get Better!
- Lady Highlander Varsity Basketball was led this year by 5 awesome seniors Kaylee Hall, Emma Steele, Kamryn Clarke, Lauren Barnes, and Lauren Hoffman. These young ladies may not have always showed up in the stat sheet game after game, but their heart and team first mentality was the glue that kept us together through a rocky season. The Lady Highlanders had to overcome many injuries, illnesses, and multiple line-ups with the majority of the team not yet having varsity experience up until this year. This can only work in our favor in the future and on to the next season. All the girls gained some great on court experience, and we absolutely know what we have to work on in this off season! This year the Lady Highlanders were led by Hailey Anderson averaging 12 points and 6 rebounds a game also leading the way was Kara Sumodobila and Anna-Claire Biggerstaff averaging 8 points and 3 rebounds for the season. Lady Highlander Varsity Basketball had a great "Just Never Stop" mentality this year. A trait you just can't teach and trait that you always need! Great job girls! Go Highlanders!!

There were many great swims, including Lillie Nordmann setting a new state record in the 200 freestyle and Matthew Tannenberger set two new school records in the 200 free and the 500 fr record which was set in 1999, and the boys' 200 medley relay set a new record as well. Cameron Cash won the diving competition for the guys! Way to go! The boys' team earned 2nd overall and the girls' team earned 5th. It was an eventful way to wrap up a great season. Ooowweee!
