Making a difference, one person at a time
Just Graduates or All of Us? (May 25 - June 1st)
I remember feeling a bit of stress as graduation approached. I always thought I was ready for the "real" world, but now I didn't really have a choice. The other feeling I had was one of inner doubt. What was I going to do? The unknown can be exciting and stressful at the same time.
Here is some advice for Graduates...but I bet it may apply to ALL of us.
1) Do What You Love! Life is about finding your purpose. It's about utilizing your strengths to make the world a better place. I find it sad when I discover people hate their job. Life is a journey, once you find your purpose pursue it with positivity and enthusiasm.
2) Never Stop Learning. Years ago a teacher shared a story with our class. The line that I'll never forget was, "The World is full of energetic people that want to succeed. Right now there is someone thousands of miles away and they are working their butt off to be the best. The minute you stop striving to improve you will be passed."
3) Experiences Shape Us. It's quite possible that your "dream job" will change. You may even need to start at the bottom and work your way up. The best advice I can share is, view each day as an opportunity to serve and support others. These daily experiences will shape you into being the best person you can be.
4) Surround Yourself With Individuals That Bring Out The Best In You. Everyone needs people in their life that will comfort them, motivate them, inspire them, and love them. As we all continue to grow we need positive influencers. It's okay to shrink your inner circle and prioritize who matters.
5) Money DEFINITELY Isn't Everything. What I know is, if your work ethic, character, and skill set are strong, the financial piece will take care of itself. Purpose driven people don't root their decisions based on money. If you chase the highest wage you are likely going to be chasing your whole life.
6) Change is Inevitable. Often times we (as people) adjust and grow from change when we are younger. Then, as many people gain experience change becomes frightening. We begin to use a phrase, "That's how we've always done it." You will endear yourself to many with an openminded, growth oriented approach.
7) Your Physical and Mental Health Must Be A Priority. When life happens the one person you may be comfortable letting down is yourself. Your health and well-being must be a priority. It's virtually impossible to be happy and passionate in life if you neglect yourself.
8) Face-to-Face Relationships Matter. There is no substitute for real. Don't ever forget that tone of voice, looking someone in the eye, giving a handshake or embracing in a hug goes much farther than a virtual heart or thumbs up.
Life is likely to be full of twists, turns, ups, and downs. Wherever you work I hope you will allow yourself to be used for a greater purpose.
