Spotlight on CTE by Paty Yepson
The STEM program allows students to gain real world experience, giving them a boost for their careers. There’s a lot more connections throughout the community, which is a great way for students to find jobs. Mr. Herring, as well as many other teachers, has a great relationship with his students, especially the ones he's seen grow every year.
“I love watching all the new classes expand, and seeing new classes be created. All the new technology being brought into the program is so great! We didn't have this type of stuff when I was in school, so I think it's pretty cool,” Mr.Herring said.
Ethan Cienega has been in the STEM program for four years gaining the knowledge for engineering work experience. By the end of the year he wants to be able to draft, problem solve, and communicate professionally.
In the practicum classes students are given a chance to intern at many jobs around Weatherford or in areas near. For example, the Law Practicum students intern as security at elementary schools teaching them the importance of campus safety and also helping them to improve their communication skills with peers and adults. This is a great opportunity for a student of any career choice to do, not only does it allow them to learn safety protocol but it also develops leadership skills. Two interns from the Law Practicum are placed at the Weatherford Police Department where they work with records, dispatch and handle evidence.
Overall practicums offer students many different opportunities for their career choice, leading them to succeed in life after high school, they gain leadership skills as well as real world experience.
