ethnic groups make-up South Africa
Until 1991, South African law divided the population into four major racial categories: (1.) The Black Africans, of which the Nguni and Sotho groups account for 90% of the Black population. Black population accounts 75% of the South Africa's entire population. (2.) The Whites who account for about 13% of the population. (3.) The Indians who account for around 3 % and (4.) the Coloreds who are mixed White and Black descent and account for 9% of the population.
The rise of Afrikanen nationalisim in the 1920s and 1930s was a critical factor in the electoral victory of the National Party (as it was renamed in 1951). Afrikaners constituted a numerical majority of the white electorate in South Africa, but they were divided along class, regional, and other fault lines
the first elected president
It was not until April of 1994 that South Africa’s first all-race elections were held. Lines for the election stretched for more than a mile in some areas and with voters waiting up to 12 hours to cast their ballots in others. Though many feared violence would erupt, over the four day election period from April 26 to April 29, but peace remained in tact. More than 17 million black South Africans over the age of 18 voted for the first time during those four days and their votes led to a new national assembly in which black South Africans and women served in significant numbers for the first time.
