Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
September 11th-15th
What's Going On This Week:
Ms. Harris' Social Studies: This week students will review our Native American Unit. Our test will be Friday. The study guide will be due on Wednesday. The students' totem poles look amazing! I am loving their explanations and all the creativity that went into creating them.
Mrs. Thurston's Math/ELA:This week we are continuing our first Lucy Calkins unit, Interpreting Characters: The Heart of the Story, and diving deep into studying characters. We will continue learning how to establish a reading life while reading our new novel, Tiger Rising. We will also start discussing character traits. In writing this week we are continuing our Realistic Fiction/Narrative unit by drafting and revising with an eye toward believability. Take a peek at your child's writing! They are all turning into something awesome! In math we will start addition! Students should be taking their notebooks home every night to review concepts taught in class. Spelling will start next week! More info to come later.
Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA: In math this week, we will wrap up place value and start addition of numbers up to the hundred thousands place. Students will be taught the standard algorithm for addition, as well as an additional place value method. Unless specified on a quiz/test, students can use whatever method works best for them. In ELA, we will continue working on story elements and character traits. Chapters 1-6 of their novels are due Wednesday. Chapters 7-12 will be due next Friday. There will be a spelling test on Friday, and students' spelling activities will be due then as well.
