What's New In Grade Two?
2nd Grade News for the Month of December
Dear Families,
Reading/ELA: In addition to working in small groups at instructional reading levels, we'll be working hard to analyze story elements. (SOL 2.8 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction texts.) These elements include:
- Characters
- Setting
- Plot (Conflict and Resolution
- Events (Summarizing and synthesizing events using beginning, middle, and end)
- Theme
Phonics: We are working on syllabication and vowel patterns/teams. This month, we'll pay close attention to:
- -r controlled vowels (ar, or, er, ear, ir, ur)
- homophones and homonyms (different ways of spelling sounds change the meanings of words that sound the same!)
Math: SOL 2.6b,c. Students will determine sums and differences using various methods and will create and solve single-step and two-step practical problems involving addition and subtraction. Some methods we'll be practicing to help us add and subtract include:
- Making a ten to solve complex problems
- Using place value
- Using a hundreds chart
- Adding to subtract
- Using number bonds
- The Arrow Way
- Mental Strategies and skip counting.
Social Science: SOL2.7a, b, c The student will locate and describe the relationship between the environment and culture of
- the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands;
- the Lakota of the Plains; and
- the Pueblo Indians of the Southwest.
Science: This month, we are working on SOL2.7- The student will investigate and understand that weather and seasonal changes affect plants, animals, and their surroundings. Some things we'll focus are:
- The effects of weather and seasonal changes on the growth and behavior of living things
- weathering and erosion of land surfaces.
As they learn about these topics in December, ask your child to reflect on what they've learned at dinner time or before bed. Looking forward to a great month of learning!
