Newsletter #1: Sharing the Planet UOI
UOI 2: Sharing the Planet
An inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.
Central idea: People should conserve water because it is a limited resource.
Key concepts: reflection, connection, responsibility
Related concepts: interdependence, relationships, initiative, scarcity, evidence, responsibility, behavior
Lines of inquiry
- How much water is in the world (Reflection)
- Where water comes from (Connection)
- Action to protect our water (Responsibility)

What Are We Learning This Unit?
Math
Kilograms and grams are measured using digital and spring scales. Students use manipulatives to build a kilogram and then decompose it to explore the relationship between the size and weight of kilograms and grams. An exploratory lesson relates metric weight and liquid volume measured in liters and milliliters, highlighting the coherence of metric measurement. Students practice measuring liquid volume using the vertical number line and a graduated beaker. Finally, they use their estimates to reason about solutions to one-step addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division word problems involving metric weight and liquid volume given in the same units.
Now more experienced with measurement and estimation using different units and tools, students further develop their skills by learning to round. They measure and then use place value understandings and the number line as tools to round two-, three-, and four-digit measurements to the nearest ten or hundred. Students measure and round to solve problems. In these topics, they use estimations to test the reasonableness of sums and differences precisely calculated using standard algorithms. From their work with metric measurement, students have a deeper understanding of the composition and decomposition of units. They demonstrate this understanding in every step of the addition and subtraction algorithms with two- and three-digit numbers, as 10 units are changed for 1 larger unit or 1 larger unit is changed for 10 smaller units. Both topics end in problem-solving involving metric units or intervals of time. Students round to estimate and then calculate precisely using the standard algorithm to add or subtract two- and three-digit measurements given in the same units.
English Language Arts
We are continuing on doing Daily 5 during our ELA time. We will be reading and writing narratives. We will analyze narratives for character traits, main idea and details. We will be learning strategies to generates ideas and to choose an interesting topic to write about. We will learn how to add dialogue into our writing, with proper use of commas and quotations. Students will practice "showing" their ideas rather than just telling them.
Science
In the coming week, the students will receive a one-gallon bottle of water. Their goal is to use this gallon for the entire day (drinking, making wudu, bathing). We've discussed that it's not sanitary to use bring the gallon into the toilet area, so we've said that'll take 2 cups of water and dump it out from the gallon each time we flush the toilet, and another 2 cups for washing our hands.
The goal of this activity is to build empathy with the many people that lack the abundance of fresh, clean water.

AQI
In AQI third grade class, we are learning :
The importance of water
the different bodies of water
and how water is used in making Wudu’.
the Fiqh part we are learning :
the Types of the water to use when making Wudu and How to conserve water with Wudu.
At-Tayamum, Nawaqid Al-wudu (Nullifications of Wudu).
The water of Zamzam and the story of finding zamzam water.
The students showed responsibility by learning Hadith about conserving the water
(لا تسرف في الماء وان كنت على نهر جار).
Students are learning new vocabulary of the sources of water.
students are using these Arabic vocabulary to build a sentence and also learning the meaning of a noun as a part of a sentence.
Here it comes to the best part of what they are doing which is Quraan! students are showing enthusiasm in learning surah Abassa and working on understanding the benefits of the water in these beautiful Ayahs. they are memorizing with tajweed rules and fluency According to their group level.
To improve the students reading skills, they are reading surah Albaqarah for a few minutes every day.
Art
Art experiences
- Expression of water’s beauty through recycled Art
- Mixed media installation
- Form and Value
Targeted MSDE Standards
1.0 Perceiving and Responding: Aesthetic Education – Students will demonstrate the ability to perceive, interpret, and respond to ideas, experiences, and the environment through visual art.
2. Identify and compare ways in which selected artworks represent what people see, know, feel, and imagine
b. Represent ideas and feelings visually that describe what is seen, felt, known, and imagined
3. Apply the elements of art and principles of design to develop compositions that convey personal meaning
