What is a House System? (Form of PBIS System-See PBIS description below)
O’Dell Elementary is excited to announce the launch of our House System in October. Every student, teacher, staff member, and parent in the school will belong to one of four Houses. Houses are like teams, where everyone belongs and everyone participates. Students and staff will be sorted into one of the following O’Dell Houses; The House of Reveur-Dreamer (Blue House), The House of Amistad-Friendship (Red House), The House of Altruismo-Givers (Black House), The House of Isibindi-Courage (Green House). Each House reflects a character trait embodied by our O’Dell community. Houses will have a specific color, mascot, chant or cheer and possible song.
How to Earn House Points?
House points will be awarded to individual students who:
● Help a classmate academically, physically or emotionally
● Being a problem solver
● Working well in a group
● Being on task when others are not
● Being respectful (not just typical courtesies such as please and thank you, but knowing to apologize if you interrupt someone or walk between a conversation)
● Exceptional work that goes above and beyond what was asked for
● Encouraging a classmate
● Taking initiative
● Demonstrating strong character
● Making our school a better place
Students can also earn House points for perfect attendance and academic excellence. Houses will meet monthly to discuss various topics and be rewarded throughout the school year.
What is PBIS? (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports)
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports is a research based systems approach for creating and maintaining a safe and effective learning environment within schools. This approach specifically teaches students behavior expectations, acknowledges and celebrates students who demonstrate socially appropriate positive behavior, and provides interventions to students in need. School-wide PBIS allows parents/guardians and teachers to have open communication about what is expected in all areas of the school.

The Counselor's Corner
As a family, brainstorm ways in which you might make someone’s life a little easier by helping a neighbor or family friend with one of their responsibilities.
This month we are talking about Responsibility! The definition are using in class is:
Responsibility: taking action and understanding the impact of our choices
Family Conversation Starters:
You really want a new game, but you need a new pair of shoes. How do you decide between wants and needs so that you can spend your money responsibly? Talk about wants and needs in your life and how you’ve learned to tell the difference!
What are some things you deeply care about? How do you show Responsibility for those things? These could include hobbies, special people, places, pets, issues, etc..
Family Challenge: Lighten Their Load
Bring your neighbor’s garbage cans in off of the curb when you get yours? Could you offer to sweep the street in front of their house after they’ve mowed the lawn? Could you make an extra portion of a meal and take half to share?
Purchasing Pictures/Picture Re-Take Day
Student yearbook pictures were taken this week, and your child should have brought home a paper with a QR code and order information. If you did not receive one for your child, please see the information below.
Photographers from Legacy Studios will retake student portraits if you are not satisfied with your child's picture proofs. New O'Dell Elementary students and students who were absent on the first picture day will be able to have their pictures made on Wednesday, November 9th.
