FOUNDATION OF AUTHENTICITY

Conceptually, Authentic Leadership as a strategy or theory came about in 2003 by a man named William George. However, the understanding, adoption, implementation, and effects began moving through leadership in the last 5-7 years.

The word "authentic" originates from the Greek term authentikos, meaning principal or genuine. Authentic Leadership is based on the premise that self-awareness, self-regulation, and positive modeling can be harnessed by leaders to promote similar authenticity in their followers to gain their commitment to organizational goals (Avolio & Gardner, 2005:3).

It is important to note that the theory of Authentic Leadership is centered on the leader's legitimacy, ethical actions, and maintenance of long-term and trusting relationships.

As leaders, we must realize and understand that being an authentic leader takes significant time and intentionality to develop. What are some of the characteristics of authentic leaders?

  • They understand themselves and how their life histories and experience have shaped them.
  • They regularly engage in critical reflection and introspection.
  • They seek honest feedback about themselves and their leadership.
  • They understand their individual leadership purpose and align this with the purpose of their organization.
  • They adapt their leadership style according to different contexts and situations (George 2003).

As a leader you must always hold to your faith, values, and ethics but be the leader you need to be for each moment. Sometimes that means to be gregarious and inspiring, other times it means to listen, and yet other times it means to lead by example rather than words. You have to match your leadership with the moment.

I hope these thoughts challenge you this week as they did me. Lead NWA well this week!
