Advice To Leaders: Work hard, play hard!
Leadership Lessons From The War on Terror
Is leading a school to success as difficult as fighting the war on terror? Maybe. Maybe not. Either way there are profound and useful lessons we can learn from our former leader on the ground General Stanley McChrystal. Just as schools have gone from staid brick and mortar to the fast pace of online, so has our enemies. In this podcast, you will learn how McChrystal adapted his leadership style for this new world. He shares lessons on teams, change and empowerment that will help you create great results in your school. Our favorite quote: “if the stupid idea works it’s not stupid.” Enjoy and let us know what leadership lesson you plan to experiment with at your school. Check out this podcast. You must have iTunes to listen.
Change Management Corner
Intention Statements Will Light Your Way:
During the summit, we recommended you create a personal intention statement and facilitate your team in creating a shared intention statement, as part of your change management process. The purpose of intention statements is two-fold. First, an intention statement will keep you and your team focused and energized on the goal when change gets hard. Second, you will gain alignment amongst your team so you everyone is a powerful cheerleader. I like to think of an intention statement as a beacon that guides the journey through change.
So what does an intention statement look like? Below are a few examples of intention statement, both personal and team:
By December 31, 2015, my team will be ready to present a teacher total rewards proposal to the CEO that improves morale and retention, that I will be proud and confident to present it to our heads of school. (personal intention statement)
By June 2017, we will have successfully and smoothly implemented the new academic plan and student first programs resulting in improved student retention, parent satisfaction, teacher morale, test scores and graduation rates and will leave us feeling fulfilled, purposeful and proud. (team intention statement)
Always remember to keep your intention statements SMARRT (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Rewarding (this is the feeling part), and Time Bound).
Cheers to You!
Take an opportunity to celebrate a colleague(s) via our weekly "Cheers" shout outs. Here are this week's cheers:
I am cheering for Alan Eldridge - our new HRBP in the Central Region - because he is incredible to work with and is always willing to lend an ear to help brainstorm ideas! Thanks for being such a great part of the Central Region. This HOS is thrilled to get to work with you!
I am cheering for Lydia Todd- She has been a great team mate, mentor, confidant, cheerleader, and collaborator in what has been (and will continue to be) an eventful transition period at NVVA.
We would like to highlight your Cheers in the next HOS Highlights newsletter. Feel free to cheer for regional teams as well as your fellow HOS's. Please submit your cheers on the form below.

2015/16 Leadership Academy Content and Focus
2015-2016 Leadership Standards and Practices
Leadership Academy #1- "Explore U": YOU are the focus of Leadership Academy #1 entitled, Explore "U". Throughout the first seven weeks we will focus on your strengths as indicated in the Myers-Briggs assessment most of you took in January, 2015. Throughout the cycle you will build upon your strengths and learn to leverage those strengths to minimize weaknesses.
Leadership Academy #2- "Build It and They Will Come": Your knowledge and expertise will be leveraged to build out content for one of the leadership strands. Each School leader chooses one standard to work with over the course of the 7 week cycle. The goal will be to codify your expertise within the leadership strand to build a complete leadership Academy cycle in your area chosen area.
Leadership Academies #3-5-: Once the content is built, you will choose one strand to focus on for the remaining cycles. Choice is built into the process and we would like you to choose two standards. We suggest you work with your RVP/DRVP to choose one leadership strand that you would like additional support in. The strands include: Strategic Leadership, Instructional Leadership, Community, Human Resources, and Organizational Management.
