2018-2019: Rich Learning; Enriched Students
Our Mission: Arbor Springs Committed to Student Success.
From Dr. Durrance
Family Fun Night was a huge success! Each year, I am so impressed with the effort and imagination that goes into the decorating, the costumes, and the themes! Thank you all for attending and huge thanks to all the hard-working moms who transformed the school for us!
More and more students are meeting their 30-book goal for the year! Some have reached 50 books, and a few Dr. Tarleton and I are enjoying chatting about the books they are reading and getting recommendations from them for books for us to read! I am enjoying The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate. This book is based on Ivan, a gorilla who lived in a shopping mall much like Willie B. from Atlanta. I distinctly remember Willie B. in his small glass enclosure, as well as when he was released into the new gorilla habitat at Zoo Atlanta. Apparently Willie B. and Ivan eventually lived together at Zoo Atlanta. Many of the students recommended the book to us!
As you may know, we had a tornado warning yesterday, November 1. The students and staff did a great job waiting it out in the hallways. We are sending home a letter from the county today detailing inclement weather procedures.
Our celebration of Grandparents' Day is coming soon! Look for a reservation form that will also come home today.
Our annual Can-a-Thon has begun, as well. This year, we will be competing by house to see which house brings in the most cans!
Lastly, our CCRPI for 2017-2018 was released earlier this week. I am including a link that will help you understand the components of the CCRPI. There were many changes from the way in which it was calculated last year; in fact, there have been changes in the formula each year since CCRPI was implemented. Feel free to call or stop by if you have any questions. You can see the CCRPI here, and you can read a guide for understanding the CCRPI here.

Swimming in a School of Character:
The character word for the month of October was Self-discipline. Self- discipline is the ability to make yourself what should be done.Teaching children self-discipline and awareness is one of the most important character traits we can teach.
To help your child develop self-discipline:
Help them to set a realistic goal, make a plan to achieve it and stick to it.
Create a reward that they are working toward to develop persistence.
Deal with emotions that interrupt such as anger, envy and a lack of confidence.
Help your child break big tasks into small tasks that can be accomplished one at a time.
(Self Control Skills for Children‖ by Louise Eckman)
Bullying Prevention Month
October was National Bullying Prevention Month. National Bullying Prevention Month is a campaign in the United States founded in 2006 by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center. The campaign is held during the month of October and unites communities nationwide to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. The goal is to encourage communities to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all children of all ages. Fourth and fifth grade students learned about the effects of peer pressure and ways to stand up to peer pressure!
Can-A-Thon
Can-A-Thon begins on November 5 and ends November 16. Please donate cans and non perishable food items!
Red Ribbon Week
The last week of October students and faculty at Arbor Springs showed our commitment to a drug-free lifestyle by participating in various Red Ribbon activities all week long. Our theme this year was “Life is Your Journey, So Travel Drug Free!” It is important to devote time to teaching the effects of drugs, making the right choices, and choosing to live a healthy lifestyle!
Arbor Springs’ Career Day:
Career Day was a HUGE success! Thank you to all the volunteers and community stakeholders that presented their career and/or vehicles to the students and staff of Arbor Springs Elementary! This day would not have been possible without your support! Thank you for taking the time to impact the lives of our students!
