Autumn Has Arrived!
We are off to a wonderful school year, and our classrooms and hallways are buzzing with songs, laughter, and the sounds of inspiration! This month, I'd like to give you a peek into our learning environment so you can see the many wonderful things happening at each grade level and across the disciplines.
Our first service project was a huge success, as students took to the outdoors! Our Learning Garden yielded a big harvest, and all of our other gardens and planters were weeded and tended to with pride.
Please enjoy this special time of year, and may it be filled with beautiful foliage, pumpkin spice, and Yankees baseball!
Best Regards,
Judy Brewster

We Love Books!
The children will enjoy listening to guest readers from around the building, including our very own Mrs. Brewster! In addition, the teachers will spend time reading one on one with each child as we get to know them as readers.
Welcome Back... from the Library Media Center
The first few weeks of school are always an exciting time of year with new classes and new routines. My name is Simone Loeffel, and I am the library media specialist at West Patent Elementary and Bedford Hills Elementary. This year I will be at West Patent on Tuesday afternoons, Wednesdays and Fridays. All WPES students will visiting the library each week to borrow books. Students in first grade - fifth grade may borrow two books and Kindergarten classes may borrow one. Please help your child to remember to return their library books so that they may be able to borrow more books on library day. I look forward to working with the students and staff to inspire reading, learn about the library and all of the wonderful kinds of books to read, and to learn about being good “digital citizens.” If you have any questions - please feel free to contact me at 241-6000 X 1911 or by email sloeffel3528@bcsdny.org.

What's Happening in 2nd Grade!
Second grade is off to a great start! The teachers are so impressed with the students' independent writing skills and what terrific readers we have! We have spent the first few weeks of school getting reacquainted, establishing rules and routines and getting our wiggles out with GoNoodle. Math fact practice is already underway. Keep up the great work! We are looking forward to an amazing year together!

Math Matters in 3rd Grade!
Third grade students have begun learning about multiplication! To practice the concept of multiplication as groups and amounts in each group, the children learned to play the game Circles and Stars. Two spinners were used. The first spinner was used to tell the player how many circles to draw (how many groups). The second spinner told how many stars to draw INSIDE each circle. The children used these two numbers as factors in a multiplication equation. The product was determined by counting, using repeated addition or using a multiplication fact.
This game can easily be recreated at home using dice!!! It’s a super way to practice multiplication facts!
Becoming a Scientist!
The 4th graders are learning what it’s like to behave like a scientist. We just kicked off our Becoming a Scientist unit with a fun experiment called “Saving Fred.“ The students were responsible for rescuing Fred (a gummy worm) from a capsized boat (a cup). Underneath the boat was a life preserver (gummy lifesaver) and students needed to retrieve the life preserver and place it around Fred’s waist. The catch? Students were not allowed to use their hands to touch the boat, Fred, or the life preserver. However, students were able to use paper clips to try and retrieve the life preserver from under the boat to put around Fred. While completing this experiment, the students learned about the scientific method. We will continue to learn what it’s like to be a scientist and complete many more exciting experiments in the upcoming weeks.
Mrs. Price's Class
Mrs. Price’s class is learning how to make juicy sentences using synonyms and making them pop with exclamatory endings! We are also learning about government and the various leaders of government including their important responsibilities! We are having a mock election to vote for a class leader, who will be responsible for making sure Mrs. Price practices safety drills and fair rules!

Notes from Dr. Mulder
Welcome to the band program. 4th and 5th grade lessons have begun. Please help your child remember his or her lesson. We only meet once a week and with holidays, special events, and field trips, we end up having about 3 lessons per month.
5th grade 8 AM band rehearsals began on Tuesday, September 25th. This is in addition to the during-school lesson.
Ideally, your child should practice 5 days a week for 20 minutes a day. For most children, this will not happen without your input. Please make sure your child practices no less than 3 times a week to ensure steady progress.
Please email or call me with any concerns.
Thank you,
Dr. Michael Mulder
