Peterson's News
12/4-12/8
I am so excited for our Math Night for Grades 3-5 on Wednesday, December 6th! We did this last year with our primary grades and it was a great night of learning and fun!!! Please see below for more information.
This week on Thursday evening is Coffee & Conversation with Dr. Talley and a two of our School Board members, Laurie Donahue and Supna Jain. It is an opportunity to have conversations about what you feel our district is doing well and what you'd like to see in the district in the future. I hope that you are able to attend!
Best,
Alli Landstrom
Book Fair!

Family Math Night
Grades 3-5 families, Let’s Play!! Students and their families in Grades 3-5 are invited to join us for a Family Math Game Night on Wednesday, December 6th from 5:30-7:00! Research shows that playing games with your child that involve numbers, cards, dice, counting, and logic provides important experiences in helping them make sense of mathematics.
This will be a night of playing games, learning why playing games and talking about math is so important, as well as having some good old fashioned family fun! Please also bring a device such as a cell phone or tablet to participate in some of the electronic games we will be playing.
If you are interested in attending and haven't RSVP'd, please email either me at allison_landstrom@ipsd.org or Becky Graske at becky_graske@ipsd.org.

Supporting Social Emotional Learning
This past month, our Second Step lessons have focused on empathy. Students were reminded to have empathy, identify their own and others’ feelings, notice and respect same and different feelings, and show compassion. Compassion involves saying kind words or doing something helpful to show you care how another person feels. When students can identify, understand, and respond in a caring way to how someone else is feeling, it helps create a positive and accepting school climate.
Second Step lessons specifically teach about empathy. You should have received Home Links describing why empathy is important and including fun activities to do with your child to help him or her identify feelings and practice showing empathy and compassion. We hope you found them helpful. Please tell your child’s teacher if you have any questions about how you can help your child learn to identify feelings and show empathy and compassion at home.
In December and January our schoolwide theme is emotion management. In our morning announcements and during class meetings, we’ll be prompting students to notice their own feelings by paying attention to clues in their bodies, and we’ll be reminding them to use their Second Step skills to calm down:
· Stop—Use your signal
· Name your feeling
· Calm down: Breathe, count, use positive self-talk
These skills help students calm down strong emotions when faced with learning and social challenges, which helps them succeed academically and get along well with others. Second Step lessons specifically teach about calming down strong emotions such as anger, disappointment, frustration, and anxiety. You’ll be receiving Home Links that describe why managing strong emotions is important and include fun activities to do with your child to help him or her identify strong feelings and calm down. We hope the Home Links will give you tools to use together when your child is upset. As always please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions about how you can help your child learn to calm down at home.
