How to Support Your ELs in the Classroom with Reading
Teaching reading to ELs may seem scary, but the good news is that you do not have to learn an entirely new method. Good instruction in reading looks the same whether you are teaching native-English speakers or ELs. You can use what you already know!

Read, Read, Read
- Choose texts based on their reading level
- Use anchor charts to support the strategy being used
- Discuss the vocabulary in the text
Reading Comprehension
- Use visuals and manipulatives
- Model what good reading looks and sounds like
- Ask specific questions about the text
Check for Understanding
- Teach students to use graphic organizers while they read
- Ask students to identify the main idea
- Have students identify the author's purpose
