Message from Mrs. Briegel
Dear Families,
What an exciting month we have had! Very soon the students will mark 100 days of learning! Students have been busy taking STAR tests and tracking their growth in their data binders!
All students take the STAR test a minimum of three times a year. Teachers use this valuable information to drive instruction.
As always, thank you for partnering with us!
Warm Regards,
Michelle Briegel
Attendance Matters
We have noticed an increase in students with significant absences as well as tardiness. Research shows a direct correlation between student’s school attendance and their performance on state tests. Instruction is based on previous learning and students with high absenteeism are missing the foundation on which to build new skills.
Being late for school hurts a child’s learning, too. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss approximately 30 hours of instruction during the year. In addition, they miss the early morning routines that set the schedule and tone for their entire day.
Children can copy notes or make up an assignment, but they can never get back what’s most important: the discussions, the demonstrations, the questions, the explanations by the teacher and the thinking that makes learning come alive. Activities such as Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop involve whole group as well as teacher instruction and interaction that cannot be “made up”.
Your child’s success in school depends on having a solid educational background – one that can only be gained through regular school attendance. Schools can’t do their job if your child is absent. Learning builds day by day. When a child misses a day of school they miss a day of learning.
You can improve your child’s school attendance by:
· Talking with your child about the importance of attending school regularly.
· Try to avoid scheduling family trips or doctor appointments during school hours.
· Make sure your child stays healthy by eating nutritious food and getting plenty of sleep and exercise.
· Don’t accept excuses for why your child “must” miss or be late for school.
· Discuss with your child what happened at school each day.
* Research shows that attendance is one of the most important factor in school success!
