The Hungate Echo

Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Summer Term 1 - Issue 3

A word from Mr Broom.

I write this week's newsletter from the Old School House at Robin Hood's Bay on the final night of our Year 4 Residential. It's been a fantastic couple of days with what can only be described as a wonderful group of children.

Meanwhile in school, I met with our dedicated lunchtime team to discuss changes to the routines and menus for September. We're having a big focus on healthy eating and healthy minds and we hope to become the leading school in the new Multi-Academy Trust (The STAR MAT) that we have joined for whole-child wellbeing. Miss Mackay will be leading on this and has already begun to attend the training days in preparation. Watch this space!

Finally, it's the bank holiday weekend and the weather looks like it's going to be good for once. I hope you enjoy the break and the short week next week. Remember, our children return to school on Tuesday.

Our Star Achievers this Week

Big picture

School Uniform & Snack Reminder

We seem to have a small number of children who are coming to school in brightly coloured trainers. These are not part of the school uniform policy. Children should wear plain black shoes.

We like to encourage our children to have a healthy break time snack and we provide this through school. However, it seems that some children are bringing snacks into school containing sweets/chocolate. These are not permitted.

Tri Golf Success

I am delighted to inform you that our Year 3 Tri-Golf team came 2nd in the inter-schools tournament. Having spoken with Mrs Sterry and Mr Wooffindin, they were both so proud of the attitude and commitment shown by our children. A real credit to us all!

BAKE SALE

Thank you to everyone who supported the Bake Sale organised by some of our Year 6 children. They raised a fantastic £111.80 for Cancer Research. Well done!

CLASS PHOTOGRAPHS

We've sent home the proofs from the class photos we had taken by Adventure Photography earlier this week. They will be collecting orders and payments from us on 15 May so make sure payment envelopes are returned to school before then. If you'd prefer to order online you can visit their website AdventurePhotography.co.uk/orderonline and use the unique reference code shown on the proof. As it's the first time we have used this company any feedback would be welcome.

SHERBURN GALA

Remember we have a non uniform day next Friday, 11 May, when children can bring in donations for the Friends of Sherburn Hungate Primary School Chocolate Tombola stall at Sherburn Gala. If you can help out on the stall for half an hour please let Friends' know.

We've also been given some information about various Gala Competitions that are taking place including a colouring competition, treasure hunt and a dog show! Please ask at the office if you would like more details.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The sandpit in the playground has been emptied and we've had a new cover fitted to help to keep it clean but we now need to fill it back up with fresh sand! Mr Wooffindin is hoping to start moving the sand on 9 May - any help would be very much appreciated!

SATs Dates

The Key Stage 2 testing period for our Year 6 children will be week commencing Monday 14th May, Key Stage 1 testing for our Year 2 children takes place throughout May, and Phonics screening for our Year 1 children (and some Year 2 children) takes place week commencing 11 June. If you have a child in Year 2 or Year 6, please make sure you don't book any term time holidays during this period. It's really important to them and us that they are in school to take the SATs assessments. Thank you.

Attendance

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 4 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 99.4%!

Our average attendance this week is a whopping 96.3%. The second time this year that all year groups have been above the magic 96%. A tremendous achievement.

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.
