GASC LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

PILLAR 2: SERVICE

Big picture

SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE: BACK-TO-SCHOOL SERVICE THAT WILL STICK!

This month's Spotlight On Service features two service projects where the only supplies you need are sticky notes and markers!
The first project is to write positive messages on sticky notes and stick them to bathroom mirrors! Students will love to look in the mirror and see a positive message or cheesy line. Just make sure that your school doesn't clean the bathrooms in a way that will ruin the sticky notes after one day, or this project might not be for you.
The second project is one that's good for making freshmen feel welcome. All you need in addition to the basic supplies is a list of every incoming freshman in your school. Then, write each one's name on a sticky note and put them on a wall in the shape of the graduating year (if you have a lot of freshmen, you may need to include an exclamation point to fit more names). For a fun incentive, tell the freshmen that if they find their name and bring it to the media center, they get candy!

Yasmen plays soccer and runs cross country. She also paints! Her mentor is her older sister, Laura. "She is there for me every time I need it, and is always the first one to step up and help me. She gives me advice and supports me through my decisions. I look up to her as an inspiration and a great role model, " Yasmen says.

Jenny Thai

Position: Middle School Member At Large

School: North Gwinnett Middle School

Grade 2019-2020: 8th

Favorite Quote: “The goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.”

One of Jenny's favorite GASC memories was her district rally last fall. "It was such an eye-opening experience where I got to meet many new people as well as develop new leadership skills. It also had a wonderful key note speaker that taught us about the influence we had on others as leaders. Overall, it was a great experience that I wish to repeat again!" Jenny says. Jenny loves to bullet journal to keep herself organized.

PILLAR 6: ADVISOR DEVELOPMENT

Big picture

Advisor of the Month: Andrew Bolin (Alpharetta High School)

August's Advisor of the Month is Andrew Bolin from Alpharetta High School!

Mr.Bolin is a student council advisor and helps manage big events at the school, including big events like pep rallies. He is a big fan of country music, specifically Big Green Tractor, and even persuaded his students to listen to the genre. Students describe him as an extremely personable advisor and someone who strives to find the good in everyone.

Natasha Havanur, a student at Alpharetta High School, nominated him because "he believes in every student's abilities and knows we can achieve whatever we put our minds to. Over the few years he has been working with our council, he has provided us with many opportunities to become better leaders, and has supported us endlessly throughout even the most stressful times (like planning for district rally, oof!). Our council is grateful to have him as one of our advisors!"

Mr. Bolin assisted Natasha and Sophia Abedi with hosting the District 1 Rally last year. He helped with recruiting and contacting schools, picking dates, fixing the air conditioning, budgeting, renting out the building, and made sure the event was a success. Students say that the event would have been impossible without his dedication and hardwork.

GASC thanks Mr.Bolin for being a rockstar! We love you!
