Fall Book Fair
The Fall Book Fair was a huge success. We squeezed a mini-book fair into our temporary library and it worked great!! Students bought over $6,000 worth of merchandise over the week. We will be able to use our profit to buy new books for the library including the new Kentucky Bluegrass Award books for 2018! We look forward to our Spring Book Fair in March held during Open House.
Books and Breakfast
Along with the Book Fair we held our second annual Books & Breakfast for our English Language Learners (ELL). Students enjoyed sharing their favorite books with friends and family. They were all entered in a raffle for book fair books. Everyone had a great time!
Digital Citizenship
All students have been working on Digital Citizenship lessons in the library this month. We’ve discussed taking care of our iPads, protecting our personal information, being safe online, and plagiarism. Our digital world is by far much larger than we can imagine so we need to stay safe when searching and connecting on the internet! DC lessons will continue throughout the year in the library and in the classrooms.
The Mustang News
Fifth graders will begin our weekly presentation of the Mustang News beginning in October. Each Friday students broadcast the news in the morning to each classroom at Moyer. Students do all the work; they write the stories including Sports and Weather segments, they produce the program, and run the camera. What a fun way to make sure everyone is up to date on what’s happening at Moyer.
Music
4th and 5th Grade
The music department here at Moyer has been abuzz with activity! 4th and 5th grade students have been working with technology to learn how to use Garage Band. Our big projects will be due around Halloween. 4th grade will be creating an “Animal Song” composition and 5th grade students will be creating an audio book and sharing their books with primary students.
2nd and 3rd Grade
2nd and 3rd grade students have been preparing for their upcoming productions. 2nd Grade will be performing a Veteran’s Day celebration a school on Friday Nov. 12. This is an intimate performance with an audience full of Veteran’s as our guests of honor. The 3rd grade are preparing for their musical “The Grumps of Ring-A-Ding Town.” The show will be Thursday December 14th. The students are doing a great job singing and dancing the songs for the show.
Kindergarten and 1st Grade
Kindergarten and 1st grade students are learning all about the elements of music. We are playing games, singing songs, playing instruments and moving to the music. We also learned all about the Star-Spangled Banner and now know how to sing our National Anthem. We are beginning God Bless America as our next Patriotic song. We will be singing this song until the beginning of November.
Choral Events
We have students involved in three different choral events. The Moyer regular choir has 70 students from grades 3-5 signed up. We are working hard to prepare for our December 5 concert. We are learning songs in German, English and Latin. We hope you come to our concert on Dec. 5th. It will be at Highlands HS Performing Arts Center at 7:00 pm. It is free to the public.
We also have 6 fifth grade students preparing for the Northern KY Honor Choir (concert will be Nov. 3 at Lakeside Christian Church) and 7 students preparing for the KY All State Chorus auditions. Students will audition for this prestigious contest on Saturday Oct. 28. Good luck 5th grade students!! (Note – if you have a 5th grade student at Moyer that wants to try out for this group, it isn’t too late to come to rehearsals. We practice every Thursday from 3:15 – 4:15 in the music room).

Physical Education
It’s hard to believe that we’ve already been in school now for over six weeks, especially with the recent warm weather. I hope your kids have been able to play outside as much as possible.
In the primary grades, we’ve been focusing on manipulating various objects as well as working on establishing space while moving in various ways. The kids have manipulated hula hoops, bean bags as well as deck rings, and have fine- tuned their locomotor skills such as walking, running, hopping, jumping, etc.
Since physical education took place in the trailer-nasium the past 16 months, I’ve started the year with some activities that we’ve not been able to participate in because of space issues. As of late, we finished our tennis unit (striking with short handled implements). Moyer borrowed tennis nets from Woodfill, Johnson and HMS and the kids were able to play both singles and doubles. Currently, the kids are starting volleyball (striking with hands). The fifth grade in the spring will have their annual volleyball tournament with the best team eventually facing Moyer teachers and administrators.
