News and Events at Freedom Middle School - Week of 12/16/19
Berwyn South School District 100 families are invited to provide feedback to schools through 5Essentials, a survey that all Illinois public schools use to gather feedback from students, parents, and employees.
Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.

6th Grade Math/Matemáticas de 6º grado
We are continuing to work hard in 6th grade math! The students have been taught to explain or show their thinking by proving their answers with math, pictures, diagrams, or graphs.
We are just finishing up our 3rd unit of the year where the students were introduced to Ratios. Working with ratios is a major focus of 6th grade math and the students are off to a great start! We started the unit with discussing proper ratio language and learning how to represent ratios with diagrams. Then we discovered how ratios are used when making recipes and even did a taste test to prove it! We also defined equivalent ratios and used that knowledge to create double number lines and tables to help represent different situations. We also discussed the importance of finding the value of 1! If you know the value of 1, you can find any answer! To help demonstrate, we used examples of going to the grocery store and finding the price of 1 item. This concept will be continued to be used next week when we begin the next unit, “Unit Rates and Percentages.”
7th grade mathematics is once again approaching the end of a unit. Your students have been working hard learning about proportional relationships. The students have used these relationships to see how the price of items changes as the quantity changes and looked at how they can scale up or down a recipe. Students have compared two or more relationships that all deal with the same situation, which allowed them to see who was running faster or how much you could get of two quantities for the same price. We look forward to starting our new unit about circles and hope your children are as well. Please enjoy the holidays and have a happy new year.
In 8th grade Math, we are currently wrapping up our unit about linear relationships - both proportional and non-proportional. In order to understand the difference between the two, students have interpreted information from tables, equations, and graphs. In this unit, students also explored how writing equations in slope-intercept form or standard form can be helpful in different situations. In our upcoming unit students will use what we have learned about linear equations to solve single variable equations and explore systems of linear equations.
